\n\n\n\nUnderstanding the seven best grass types for Maryland is one way for homeowners to contribute to maintaining the state’s beauty. This way, you can choose a well-adapted grass type that can transform an ordinary lawn into a verdant retreat.
\n\n\n\nIn this article, we’ll cover:
\n\n\n\nLiving in Maryland has its positives and negatives when it comes to our landscaping. Being in a transition zone means we have hot summers and cold winters. We are far enough south to be able to grow warm-season grasses, and we are also far enough north that we can grow cool-season grasses as well.
\n\n\n\nLet’s differentiate between these two types of grasses:
\n\n\n\nWarm-season grasses: You will mostly find these types of grasses in the southern states. They originated in the subtropics and like mild winters and hot summers. Warm-season grasses will be at their greenest with temperatures 80-95 degrees Fahrenheit.
\n\n\n\nCool-season grasses: These grasses prefer cold winters and warm summers along with regular intervals of rain. They grow the most when temperatures are 60-75 degrees Fahrenheit.
\n\n\n\nWhile we may have more grass options than our neighbors to the north or south, establishing a yard can be very challenging since we don’t live in an optimal climate for either type of grass. But understanding the characteristics of these seven grasses can help you choose the best variety for your Maryland home.

\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFine fescue is a low-maintenance turf that doesn’t need much fertilizing, watering, or mowing, making it a fantastic option for homeowners who don’t have time to maintain their lawns. It can even go up to four weeks without rain before needing to be watered. However, it is prone to buildup and will need periodic dethatching.
\n\n\n\nThere are five major species of fine fescues:
\n\n\n\nAll five species are often sold as a blended seed mix for best results but also can be blended with Kentucky bluegrass and ryegrass. Of all the turfgrasses, fine fescue is the most shade tolerant – making it an excellent option if you have lots of trees, bushes, or ground coverings. It also likes difficult soils like clay, rocky, and sandy soils.
\n\n\n\nClassification: Cool-season grass
\n\n\n\nSpreads by: Bunch-type (except for creeping red fescues, which possess rhizomes)
\n\n\n\nShade tolerance: Moderate to high

\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWith a dark green boat-like shaped leaf, Kentucky bluegrass is the most widely used cool-season grass in the country. Despite its needy nature, the grass’s durability and fine to medium texture are the reasons it’s often used for home lawns, athletic fields, and golf courses.
\n\n\n\nA shallow root system is to blame for Kentucky bluegrass’s neediness as it doesn’t allow for easy water absorption. As a result, it calls for regular watering. It’s susceptible to disease and buildup that will require dethatching.
\n\n\n\nThis high-maintenance grass may not be suitable for all Maryland homeowners, but the reward is well worth it if you’re willing to put in the effort. Plus, this barefoot-friendly grass is durable enough for the kiddos and pets to run around and play sports.
\n\n\n\nClassification: Cool-season grass
\n\n\n\nSpreads by: Rhizomes
\n\n\n\nShade tolerance: Low to moderate — prefers full sun
\n\n\n\nDrought resistance: Moderate, but will survive by going dormant

\n\n\n\nMaintenance needs: Moderate mowing frequency; a high-maintenance grass
\n\n\n\nMowing height: 2-3 inches

\n\n\n\nSoil type: Good drainage, fertile
\n\n\n\nOther notes: Under optimal conditions, Kentucky bluegrass cultivars have the capacity to create a dense and lush lawn. The level of shade tolerance and drought resistance vary among different cultivars, but newer cultivars are hardier and tend to be more resistant to diseases. This grass is commonly mixed with other species, like tall fescue, to achieve desired characteristics and enhance overall lawn quality.

\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis versatile turf is used in residential yards, parks, playgrounds, and golf courses. Perennial ryegrass is a sharp-pointed, fine-textured, bright green grass with a leaf that folds at the bud. It can tolerate some shade but prefers to soak in the sun.
\n\n\n\nSince it germinates quickly, perennial ryegrass is often used in seed mixtures. However, it should not be more than 5-15% of the mixture due to its short life span and disease problems. For this reason, having a pure perennial ryegrass lawn is not a good idea due to its susceptibility to disease.
\n\n\n\nClassification: Cool-season grass
\n\n\n\nSpreads by: Bunch-type grass
\n\n\n\nShade tolerance: Low — prefers full sun
\n\n\n\nDrought resistance: Low (summer dormancy in some areas)
\n\n\n\nFoot traffic tolerance: High — but has a poor recuperative ability
\n\n\n\nMaintenance needs: High — needs frequent watering; moderate mowing requirement, depending on cutting height (lower cutting heights require more frequent mowing)
\n\n\n\nMowing height: 2-3 inches
\n\n\n\nPotential for disease: High, especially in areas with hot, humid summers
\n\n\n\nPotential for pests: Low resistance
\n\n\n\nSoil pH: 6-7
\n\n\n\nSoil type: Good drainage, high fertility
\n\n\n\nOther notes: Most often mixed with Kentucky bluegrass and fine fescue in a cool-season mix; well known for its excellent striping ability, low mowing tolerance (reel mower fans, this one’s for you), and rapid germination rate (four to seven days). Needs moderate levels of fertilizer.

\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA fast-growing versatile grass, tall fescue has an extensive root system, making it an excellent drought-resistant option. It has a medium to rough texture with a needle-like tip and is purple at the base of the stem. It grows the most during spring and fall while becoming semi-dormant during the hot, dry summer months.
\n\n\n\nTall fescue’s roots grow deeper than most other cool-season grasses, often 2 to 3 feet deep, allowing it to be tolerant of our hot Maryland summers. Its weather tolerance is also what allows it to maintain its deep green color much later into the season than other cool-season grasses.
\n\n\n\nSummer stressors and bunch-type growth may cause thin growth patterns in a tall fescue yard resulting in a need to reseed your lawn annually.
\n\n\n\nClassification: Cool-season grass
\n\n\n\nSpreads by: Bunch-type grass
\n\n\n\nShade tolerance: Moderate to high
\n\n\n\nDrought resistance: Moderate
\n\n\n\nFoot traffic tolerance: Moderate, but low ability to recuperate from wear
\n\n\n\nMaintenance needs: Moderate – it has a fast rate of growth, so plan to mow often
\n\n\n\nMowing height: 2-4 inches (Check your cultivar and state recommendations. Many tall fescue lawns grow best when they’re mowed on the tall side.)
\n\n\n\nPotential for disease: Low to moderate under proper management conditions
\n\n\n\nPotential for pests: Low to moderate resistance
\n\n\n\nSoil pH: 5.5-6.5
\n\n\n\nSoil type: Prefers well-drained, fertile soil but will tolerate a wider range of soil conditions
\n\n\n\nOther notes: To address bare spots and thinning areas in your lawn, you should reseed every few years. Avoid planting outdated varieties like Kentucky-31 and opt for “turf-type” tall fescue (TTTF) instead. For the best chances of achieving a robust lawn, consider seed blends containing multiple TTTF cultivars.

\n\n\n\nBermudagrass loves the sun and high temperatures making it the perfect summertime grass for your Maryland yard. However, it does not tolerate cold temperatures well. Residents living in the northern parts of the state may want to consider cool-season grass instead.

\n\n\n\nOther notes: Bermudagrass displays aggressive spreading through its above-ground stolons and below-ground rhizomes, giving it a competitive edge against numerous weed species. However, this trait also can present challenges as it tends to become invasive. It frequently infiltrates flower beds through underground tunnels and extends its reach into adjacent lawns.

\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis high-maintenance grass may not be the best option for some Maryland residents due to its lack of cold tolerance. However, St. Augustinegrass could be a great option for homeowners living along the Eastern shore, as it can be planted in sandy soils and has a high salt tolerance.
\n\n\n\nThis warm-season grass has a coarse, spongy texture with broad-rounded tips. And since St. Augustinegrass can be susceptible to insects and diseases, particularly fungi, homeowners should give it TLC and look out for any signs of distress.
\n\n\n\nIts fast-growing blue-green blades are quick to establish but will need lots of moisture, so be sure to water regularly. Also, St. Augustinegrass is not tolerant of heavy traffic, so you may want to consider another type of grass if you have children or pets that will often be playing in the yard.

\n\n\n\nShade tolerance: Moderate shade tolerance, among the highest of any warm-season grass; some cultivars are more shade tolerant than others

\n\n\n\nSoil pH: 6-7.5
\n\n\n\nSoil type: Tolerates many soil types; prefers moderately fertile and moist (not waterlogged) soils; not a highly drought-tolerant grass; doesn’t tolerate soil compaction
\n\n\n\nOther notes: Native to coastal areas across the world and prefers moist soils and mild winters; will thrive in more inland areas provided growing conditions are met; good salt tolerance; will go dormant during winter in all but the southernmost regions

\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor the warmer southern regions of Maryland, Zoysiagrass may be a better alternative to the more traditional tall fescue typically seen throughout the state. As a warm-season grass, it will go dormant from fall through mid-May, but it can be planted in sandy soils.
\n\n\n\nOnce established, Zoysiagrass is more resistant to diseases. It’s also more drought tolerant, thanks to its deep roots. Its thick and dense growth will also help prevent weeds from poking through and taking up residency.
\n\n\n\nZoysiagrass blades are fine to medium texture and form a soft, cushiony yard perfect for youngsters and pets to run and play.
\n\n\n\nClassification: Warm-season grass
\n\n\n\nSpreads by: Stolons and rhizomes
\n\n\n\nShade tolerance: Tolerates light to moderate shade
\n\n\n\nDrought resistance: High
\n\n\n\nFoot traffic tolerance: High
\n\n\n\nMaintenance needs: Low to moderate nitrogen requirement; moderate mowing frequency (cut with sharp mower blade; mow taller if the grass is in partial shade)
\n\n\n\nMowing height: 1-2.5 inches
\n\n\n\nPotential for disease: Moderate resistance
\n\n\n\nPotential for pests: Moderate resistance
\n\n\n\nSoil pH: 6-6.5
\n\n\n\nSoil type: Well-draining soil, but some cultivars are more tolerant of a wide range of soils than others
\n\n\n\nOther notes: This warm-season grass is moderately salt tolerant
\n\n\n\nFine fescue is your best bet for a shady lawn. They need a bare minimum of two hours of direct sunlight compared to the four hours tall fescues need. But remember, fine fescue does not handle heavy traffic well.
Tall fescue is the recommended grass for homeowners with a lawn that receives a minimum of four hours of direct sunlight each day.
Tall fescue (90-95%) with a mixture of Kentucky bluegrass (5-10%) is your best option for a high-traffic lawn.

\n\n\n\nAll turfgrass is categorized into two types: warm-season and cool-season. Warm-season grasses do best in hot southern climates, while cool-season grasses do well in cold northern climates.
\n\n\n\nWarm-season grasses are a safe bet for most of Southern California. However, you can use cool-season grasses as long as you don’t live in the Southeastern desert regions of the state. Let’s review the crucial differences to narrow down your options.

\n\n\n\nThis warm-season grass has a medium to coarse texture and a gray-green color. Hybrid varieties have a finer texture and a blue-green to dark green color. You can establish bermudagrass from seeds, sod, or plugs.
\n\n\n\nBermudagrass is resilient in the face of disease, heat, foot traffic, and drought. It will require infrequent irrigation, though it benefits from deep watering to develop a healthy root system. Because of its high salinity tolerance, it makes an excellent lawn for coastal properties. It’s also a good choice for families with playful children and pets.
\n\n\n\nBermudagrass ranges from low to high maintenance depending on the variety, with hybrids requiring the most fertilization and mowing. It may spread where it’s not wanted due to its aggressive growth, though edging can help. This grass’ worst enemies are shade and cold weather. It will become more vulnerable to weeds and traffic damage under those conditions.

\n\n\n\nUC Riverside and UC Davis researchers developed the buffalograss cultivar UC Verde to provide more drought-tolerant options for California homeowners. Other varieties can also do well in Southern California, though they may be less drought tolerant. Buffalograss is available in seed, sod, and plug form, while the UC Verde cultivar is only available as plugs.
\n\n\n\nBuffalograss is low maintenance, requiring little mowing, fertilization, and irrigation. You can mow it every few weeks or leave it unmowed for a meadow-like appearance. Its water needs are less than half of other common grass types, including bermudagrass and tall fescue. Once established, it can hold its own against weeds, diseases, and pests.
\n\n\n\nLike many warm-season grasses, buffalograss doesn’t handle shade or cold weather well. It will turn brown at the first sign of frost or if not watered for long periods in summer. To keep a buffalograss lawn green in winter, use biodegradable green dye or overseed with annual ryegrass. Buffalograss’ light to grayish-green color may not appeal to everyone. The expensive seeds and sod also can be a deterrent.

\n\n\n\nThis East African grass has a coarse texture and light green color, similar to St. Augustinegrass. Though it is not a common turfgrass choice in California, kikuyugrass has gained popularity over the years.
\n\n\n\nThis low-maintenance grass isn’t very susceptible to disease. It thrives in moderate temperatures but also can handle heat and drought. You can plant kikuyugrass in moderate shade and low-fertility soils. Its aggressive growth allows it to recover from wear and tear quickly.
\n\n\n\nWhy isn’t kikuyugrass more popular for lawns? Due to its aggressive growth, this grass is considered a weed in many parts of coastal and inland California. Its rapid growth makes it prone to thatch, making mowing difficult. You’ll need to mow frequently to keep up with growth and avoid scalping damage. Remember that kikuyugrass is susceptible to cold and will go dormant in winter.

The only major pest it deals with is nematodes. It will require little fertilizer and a moderate amount of mowing. Though Zoysiagrass prefers full sun, you can plant it in a yard with partial shade.
\n\n\n\nOne downside of Zoysiagrass is its slow establishment. As a result, many homeowners choose to skip seeds and use Zoysiagrass sod or sprigs. \n\n\n\nThough there are many types of bentgrass, it’s no surprise that California native bentgrass is well adapted to drought conditions. This species is also called seashore bentgrass, thingrass, or Agrostis pallens. It has uniform growth, a medium texture, and deep green color. Some consider it a turfgrass alternative, but you can still make it into a traditional lawn.
\n\n\n\nSeashore bentgrass requires half the water of typical cool-season grasses and can stay green year-round. Its self-repairing rhizomes allow it to bounce back from damage. This grass naturally grows from around 4 to 28 inches. You can cut it short or keep it long for a meadow-like appearance. Remember, you can’t go straight from shaggy lawn to close-cut turf, or you could damage the grass. Lower the height gradually if you want to switch.
\n\n\n\nBecause of its slow establishment and growth rate, seashore bentgrass sod is expensive. As the name suggests, this grass type is best suited for coastal areas. It doesn’t do well in the central valley or the California deserts.

\n\n\n\nThis cool-season grass is one of the most common lawn grasses in California. Tall fescue is dark green with a moderate to coarse texture. Turf-type tall fescues and dwarf turf-type tall fescues are shorter with a finer texture.
\n\n\n\nTall fescue is generally low-maintenance, with little watering required. Sow densely for a uniform lawn and good weed and disease resistance. It also handles moderate traffic well. Tall fescue will stay green in warm and cool weather if neither is too extreme. It handles heat and drought stress well due to its extensive root system. Plant it in the sun or partial shade.
\n\n\n\nTall fescue’s bunch-type growth pattern means it won’t repair bare patches on its own. Reseed thin or patchy lawns to improve their appearance and performance. Though it does well in many parts of the state, it’s unsuitable for high-altitude areas.

\n\n\n\nSoil pH: 5.5-6.5
\n\n\n\nSoil type: Fertile, good drainage, but will tolerate a wider range of soil conditions
\n\n\n\nOther notes: Reseed every few years to repair bare spots and thinning; don’t plant old varieties such as Kentucky-31; look for “turf-type” tall fescue (TTTF). Seed blends with more than one TTTF cultivar give the best chance for a strong lawn.
\n\n\n\nThe best no-mow grass types are UC Verde buffalograss and native California bentgrass. You can let either grow out into a natural-looking meadow. If you revert to a shorter height, gradually bring the mowing height down and never cut off more than one-third of the grass’ blade at once.
If you want traffic tolerance, the most durable grass types are bermudagrass, kikuyugrass, and Zoysiagrass. Each can handle playful dogs, energetic children, and backyard parties without falling into ruin. Remember that all grass types can be damaged with excessive or rough use. However, these grass types stand the best chance of resistance and recovery.
The best grass types for full sun are bermudagrass, buffalograss, and native California bentgrass. These types prefer full sun and may not do well in the shade. Zoysiagrass also does well in full sun, but it will tolerate more shade than the others.
A water-efficient lawn is only one component of drought-resistant landscaping. When paired with plants native to Southern California, your yard could save you water, time, and money. It also will be more fire-resistant.

\n\n\n\nZoysiagrass is a light to medium green, dense, slow-growing turf that’s popular for its appearance and weed control. This versatile, durable grass can also handle various soil types, drought, and a lot of foot traffic.
\n\n\n\nBecause the grass grows and establishes slowly, the best way to create a zoysiagrass lawn quickly is with sod, but it will also be more expensive. Either way, to make sure your zoysiagrass grows well, you need to care for it correctly. That includes fertilization, watering, and so forth. You’ll also find that its thatch builds up quickly, and you’ll need to remove it.

When it comes to tolerating shade, St. Augustinegrass is the undisputed winner. Zoysiagrass’ shade tolerance comes second.
If you want to keep your lawn maintenance tasks to a minimum, consider centipedegrass. Centipedegrass needs infrequent mowing and little fertilizer, which makes it a suitable low-maintenance option.
Bermudagrass is the best option for busy lawns. Alternatively, zoysiagrass will work, too.
Both bermudagrass and zoysiagrass can handle heavy foot traffic and pet activity, so decide which one of them suits your needs better.

\n\n\n\nFertilizer comprises three primary nutrients: nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K). Labels have three numbers, such as 5-10-5, which means the fertilizer contains 5% nitrogen, 10% phosphorus, and 5% potassium. Select a fertilizer ratio to satisfy your soil test results.
\n\n\n\nFertilize your lawn with 0.5 pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet of lawn in September, six weeks before expected frost. Pay attention to the potassium needs on your soil test results and select a low-nitrogen, high-potassium blend if needed.
\n\n\n\nNever apply nitrogen to St. Augustinegrass, centipedegrass, or Zoysiagrass in the fall. High nitrogen rates increase winter weeds and new growth, which fights against the naturally slowing growth of these turfgrasses as they prepare for winter dormancy. Apply potassium if your soil test recommends it.
\n\n\n\nLime is a fall soil amendment like fertilizer composed of limestone rock ground into powder. It contains calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate. The addition of lime to your turfgrass increases nutrients and soil alkalinity, spreading beneficial bacteria. The ideal pH for your soil depends on the type of turfgrass in your landscape.

\n\n\n\nThe key here is not to “scalp” your grass, meaning cut it too short. Scalping lets precious water evaporate more quickly in the Texas heat. It also stresses your grass, leaving it vulnerable to diseases and pests.
\n\n\n\nYour lawn is most likely a warm-season variety like St. Augustine, Zoysia grass, buffalo grass or Bermudagrass. Your proper grass length depends on the variety you have. Experts recommend St. Augustine be cut 2 to 2.5 inches tall. The recommended height for common Bermuda is 1.25 to 1.5 inches tall. Zoysias should be between 2 to 3 inches tall, and buffalograss is the longest, with a recommended height of 3 to 4 inches. Look to mow the lawn about once a week during the hot season. Pro tip: mow in a different direction each time. This helps the blades of the grass stand up straight and prevent ruts. The grass will most likely be dormant from about November to early March.
