\n","content":"\nLawn mower maintenance isn’t rocket science, but ignoring it could send your yard care costs soaring. A little bit of DIY and TLC at the right time (usually the beginning of mowing season) will go a long way in making your mowing and lawn care smooth and easy, all season long.
\n\n\n\nThere are generally two kinds of lawn mowers. A push mower, which can be gas-powered, electric, or even human-powered. The gas-powered, small engine type is the most common. Riding mowers and lawn tractors are gas-powered, as well. They’re great for big yards that are either flat or have gently sloping hills. They tend to be more expensive and more complicated to maintain because they have more parts.
\n\n\n\nDirt and other debris can get into the oil and gunk things up, so you’ll want to begin every mowing season with an oil change. You will remove the drain plug, if your mower has one, and let the oil drain out. If your mower doesn’t have a cap, you’ll need to tilt the mower to drain the oil through the fill hole. Check with your owner’s manual for the best kind of oil for your lawn mower.
If the seal on the old plug is leaking, replace it. You’ll also need to replace the spark plugs. The spark plug wires get worn, and that will affect the lawn mower’s ability to start the mower engine. The size of the spark depends on how wide the gap is — which is at the end of the spark plug. It’s a thin piece of metal that bends 90 degrees over the end of the plug. You can clean the gap if the lawn mower seems to sputter, or you can just buy a new plug and replace it.
\n\n\n\nIf your mower engine has the accordion-style paper filters, they’re easy to replace. If you have a foam filter, rinse it with a high powered hose and let it dry.
\n\n\n\nAn essential maintenance tip includes sharpening your mower blades at least once during every mowing season. Dull blades stress your grass by ripping and tearing the grass blades, instead of cleanly cutting. You can sharpen your own blades with a metal file and vice, but you’re probably better off letting a pro do it or buying new blades.

While you’re at it, get rid of all the dirt and debris in the undercarriage. The grass clippings and debris can jam your mower’s discharge chute. Disconnect the spark plug first, to be on the safe side. A wire brush will loosen or remove most of the debris. Spray the rest out with a hose. It seems tedious, but it will make a difference to your lawn. The PennState Extension office warns, “Dull, improperly adjusted and dirty equipment not only destroys the aesthetic value of the turf by discoloration and bruising of the leaf tips, but also provides more ready access for disease organisms and insects through the damaged leaves.”
\n\n\n\nIf you’re too busy to DIY, take it to a pro. If you bought your lawn mower new, the store or dealership may offer maintenance service. You can also lookup lawn mower repair shops online and see which ones perform regular maintenance. Expect to pay between $50 to $100, depending on your type of mower.
\n\n\n\nDraining the gas tank is end-of-season maintenance. One of the biggest culprits, when a gas-powered lawn mower won’t start, is old gas. Drain whatever is left after the end of the mowing season, and start with a gas tank full of new fuel. Old oil and gas lose their effectiveness over time. Be sure to dispose of whatever you have left in your gas can, as well. This will eliminate a fire hazard in your garage.
\n\n\n\nAs with any piece of outdoor power equipment, make sure your lawn mower is off before you begin any maintenance or repairs. It’s also important to check the oil level periodically, usually by using the dipstick. We’ve come a long way since lawn mowers took a lot of muscle and patience to operate. Traditional Japanese gardens (also called Zen Gardens) have always been intended to be spaces of meditation and reflection. Deeply connected to the tea ceremony, they originally began as a space made for Japan’s rulers and royalty, and have transformed over time into a way of life and deep-rooted into Japan’s culture. For many, there is something profound and calming about Asian design whether it is in art, architecture, or fashion. Perhaps it is the influence of the regions’ philosophical outlook on life or the value in leading a simple lifestyle that is deeply connected with nature of the region that has shaped style and design principles for several centuries. Either way, traditional landscape design done in the style of a ‘Japanese’ Garden can create a unique calming oasis in any backyard setting.
\n\n\n\nIt is good to not\nthat if your goal is to create a true Japanese garden you should be prepared to\ndo a little research before you begin as it will take some self education to\nstay loyal to the culture of these traditional creations. At first glance, it\ncould be tempting to utilize many cliché ideas of what the Japanese Zen garden\nshould look like, many of which actually are preconceived notions coming from\nChinese design and culture. Additions such as red hanging flowers and bridges\ncovering small streams are all actually derived from Chinese traditions and\noften mistaken for Japanese garden design. While each and every attempt at this\ntype of landscape is going to be slightly different depending on who is\ncreating it, the theory behind the garden should be consistent — Creating your\nown haven of simplicity and zen.
\n\n\n\nMany Japanese gardens have paths that meander through space, crisscrossing streambeds, either symbolic or flowing with real water, and designed to guide a visitor on a meditative walk. To get the same effect of this thought-provoking walk but on a smaller, backyard scale, try to incorporate a walkway made up of stepping stones. The act of having to step from stone to stone will slow your way through the garden and encourage you to be present in the journey and experience the natural environment you have created elsewhere. Other design elements linked to pathways, such as courtyards, planting beds, and other garden elements should be laid out to promote balance in the landscape. Unlike classical European gardens that favor symmetry, Japanese gardens often achieve balance through asymmetry. For example, if a large boulder is placed on one side of a pathway, a tree is often placed on the other to promote the balance of form.

To get the look in your own backyard, pick a shady spot if possible and dig a shallow depression to act as a dry streambed. Fill this area with dark gravel and nestle rounded fieldstones along the banks and fill in with ferns and tufts of various sedges (Carex). You now have low maintenance dry creek bed.
\n\n\n\nJapanese gardens often have one or more large stones or boulders representing mountains in the landscape and anchoring the design. Boulders look more natural, and more like miniature mountains when they are partially buried and have plants nestled around the base, or small shrubs placed nearby to relate to the size and scale of the stone.
\n\n\n\nOriginally designed as meditation gardens, dry landscapes made up of a composition of rocks, moss and small trees are also common elements of Japanese gardens. The pale sand or fine gravel spread to cover the ground represents water and is often raked into ripples. Even on a small scale in a home garden, these stylized landscapes can be very peaceful to gaze upon.

As is true with most landscape design, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed with either joy or dread at the vast options of plants to choose for your new landscape design. But when designing a Japanese or Zen Garden do not feel pressured to incorporate a large variety of plants into the garden. In fact, by sticking with two or three essential mossy or low growing ornamental grasses, you will not only have an easy-to-maintain garden, but you will be more likely to achieve the necessary step of keeping everything simple. A garden that is crafted with the simplicity of design as the driving focus quickly allows a visitor’s mind to unclutter itself. In fact, a true replica garden will not contain flashy or bright colors. Instead, monochromatic green is preferable and used as a primary palette.
\n\n\n\nWhen it comes to flowers, they are not out of the question. It’s just important to recognize their role in the garden and your journey towards Zen. Flowers can be colorful, but not so colorful as to be distracting. Above all, the Japanese traditions calls for flowers to work towards highlighting the green that acts as the balancing color of the garden.
\n\n\n\nIn addition, the garden arrangement is going to be key. The thought process behind a garden such as this is that every little detail is a symbol. The entirety of the landscape is meant to work towards creating Zen, which means everything serves a purpose. But of course, rules were meant to be broken, and if you are creating a space of your own to relax and meditate in, be sure to make some personal additions that help you on your way to your own piece of inner bliss.
\n\n\n\nA discussion about Japanese gardens would not be complete without mentioning the beauty of the graceful branch formations and delicate leaves of Acer palmatum, or the Japanese Maple. They have long been cherished by both Japanese gardeners and those that value the uniqueness of the tree worldwide. All varieties of the trees stay relatively small, 5 to 25 feet, smaller with pruning, making them beautiful additions to small backyards, near entrances, or in courtyard gardens. Today, buyers can choose from varieties with leaf colors ranging from chartreuse to plum and various forms of leaves from wide palm shapes to long skinny, serrated leaves.

We\nhave now discussed the basics of design for a Japanese garden. However, it is\ntrue that you own the landscape and can do anything you want with the space so\nas to best serve your own needs. Yet as we have already discussed, there are\nsimple guidelines to follow for making the garden more attractive and enjoyable\nto you and anyone who experiences it. The following rules for what not to do\nare commonsense principles as you get involved in the design process of a\ntraditional Japanese garden.
\n\n\n\nResist the temptation to paint wooden benches, fences, gates, arbors, or other garden structures. Instead, use a natural colored stain them as needed or allow them to weather naturally. An exception to this rule would be a brightly colored bridge that serves as a focal point. These are often painted a red-orange and have a shiny lacquer finish.
\n\n\n\nToo much color can literally take over the landscape and upset the desired natural flow. Use bright colors sparingly, and specifically, more as an accent.
\n\n\n\nIf you wish to have art or decorations in your Japanese garden, strive to look for ones made of natural elements, such as a windchime made with shells or bamboo or a bird bath carved out of a stone. If you do find that there are no other alternatives, such as a plastic pond liner, simply ensure that all non-natural materials are covered with natural stone, mulch or plant material.
\n\n\n\nThis is a handy rule of thumb when it comes to any type of design. Natural (and non-natural) elements just look better when arranged in odd groupings. For some, it can be hard to not create a landscape design without keeping symmetrical throughout the space, but release yourself from that ‘symmetrical, even-number-is-the-best’ part of your personality, and understand garden elements look more random and aesthetically pleasing if arranged in odd numbers groupings. Remember, we are trying to harness the beauty of nature, and nature is by some definition, random and chaotic order.
\n\n\n\nDeciding to create your own backyard Japanese zen garden can be a large undertaking. While this work of art does take some time to get just right, the benefits of a Japanese garden are worth it in the end. Not only will you have a space you can truly make your own and enjoy the physical and mental health benefits for years to come, but you’ll have learned a history behind your design. You will be able to give your garden a true purpose that is based on a deep-rooted cultural history. However, keep in mind that your end result will be one unique to you and your needs, and while rules are good guidelines, they can also be broken!

\n\n\n\nNew York enjoys warm to hot summers and cold winters. The difference is even more pronounced in upstate New York, where regions bordering the Great Lakes experience brutally cold, ridiculously snowy winters. Downstate sees warmer summers with higher humidity levels, but the winters are cold and wet.
\n\n\n\nOverall, cool-season grasses are best suited to New York’s climate because they tolerate cold well, and the heat isn’t sustained or intense enough to do any real harm.
\n\n\n\nLet’s take a closer look at each kind:

\n\n\n\nFine fescue has a soft texture. However, it can’t tolerate high foot traffic. Fine fescue requires low maintenance but is highly susceptible to red thread and other diseases.
\n\n\n\nWe recommend mixing fine fescue with other cool-season grasses for the best results. New York homeowners usually mix fine fescue with Kentucky bluegrass at a 50:50 or 50:25 ratios.

\n\n\n\nTall fescue has a deep root system, so it tolerates shade and drought. The leaves are dark green in color, with a coarse appearance. You can combine tall fescue with other cool-season grasses for a better lawn appearance.
\n\n\n\nOn the down side, if you plan to use your lawn heavily, avoid tall fescue. It can handle normal yard usage but doesn’t tolerate heavy foot traffic. On the up side, tall fescue resists diseases pretty well but requires frequent mowing and fertilization.

\n\n\n\nAccording to Salt Lake City Public Lands Department, new trees typically need to be watered 1 to 2 times per week. In summer, you should increase the frequency to 3 to 4 times per week.
According to the University of Maryland, most trees shouldn’t need fertilizer, especially when they’ve become mature. It’s definitely better to avoid fertilizing at planting time because it can stunt growth. You should also certainly not use fertilizer if the tree has recently suffered root damage.

Its soft, smooth leaves combined with its moderate foot traffic tolerance and thick turf make it perfect for walking on barefoot or engaging in outdoor activities.
\n\n\n\nIf you like spending time outdoors working on your lawn, then Kentucky bluegrass is a good choice. It requires a bit more maintenance than other grasses on this list, both in mowing and especially fertilization.

\n\n\n\nFine fescue’s moderate to high drought tolerance lets it last much longer with less water than most grasses when the weather gets dry. Combined with its low maintenance requirements and tolerance of most soil types, this makes it an extremely hardy grass that can grow in conditions that other types can’t tolerate for one reason or another.
\n\n\n\nUnfortunately, fine fescue’s low tolerance for foot traffic means that you won’t be able to host barbecues on it every day. If you’re looking for a great-looking hardy lawn that you don’t intend to use all that much, fine fescue sounds like the grass for you.

\n\n\n\nBlue grama grass may be a warm-season grass, but don’t worry, it can handle the Colorado Springs weather just as well as any cold-season grass. It does go dormant when the temperatures drop too low, but otherwise, it makes for a fine-looking grass that can handle whatever Colorado can throw at it.
\n\n\n\nDue to blue grama’s bunch-type growth, you’ll have to seed it thickly to use it as a complete ground cover. It’s certainly possible, but you may be better off using blue grama as a complement for other grass types that can form a carpet more easily. Its exceptional foot traffic tolerance makes it good for reinforcing other grasses that don’t handle it as well.
\n\n\n\nThanks to blue grama’s high drought tolerance and love for the sun, it does extremely well in an open lawn without much shade. In addition, it’s a very good choice for xeriscaping should you choose to make the switch.

It has a beautiful gray to blue-green color with a fine texture that makes it comfortable to walk on with bare feet. But unfortunately, its poor tolerance for foot traffic makes it a bad idea to play backyard football on a regular basis.
\n\n\n\nLike blue grama, buffalograss has a very good drought tolerance and does best with lots of sun. But unlike blue grama, buffalograss is not a bunch-type grass. This means it easily forms a proper ground cover via stolons. However, keep in mind that buffalograss forms a thick thatch that you’ll need to remove about once a year.
\n\n\n\nBuffalograss is also very low maintenance aside from weed control and keeping away diseases. Overall, it’s a great grass type for someone who wants a good-looking front lawn that they don’t intend to use very often.

\n\n\n\nZoysiagrass comes in at least 11 varieties, all used as turfgrass. Some varieties perform better at higher mowing heights, while others have improved shade tolerance. The type of Zoysiagrass you choose depends on your environment and how much work you plan to do.

Zoysiagrass only requires mowing once a week, making it the most low-maintenance, but centipedegrass is worth looking into if you don’t mind mowing a little more often (7 to 10 days).
If you plan on having many people and animals on your lawn often, bermudagrass and zoysiagrass are the way to go.
