This comes at a time when many drought-prone areas are imposing similar restrictions. The city’s don’t want us to stop watering, just to water smartly. You can do that by familiarizing yourself with the water restrictions in Fort Worth.
\n\n\n\nFort Worth has implemented a twice a week smart watering system. This means you can water your yard and garden twice a week, but only on certain days.
\n\n\n\nThe water restrictions in Fort Worth also prohibit you from watering while it’s raining. Allowing your sprinkler to water the sidewalks and gutters is also a big no-no. Damaged sprinkler heads that lead to wasted water can also net you a fine.
\n\n\n\nAs of June 1, 2007, any irrigation system installed in the Fort Worth area must include rain and freeze sensors. This prevents automatic sprinklers from turning on when mother nature is watering for us. Before installing a new irrigation system, or retrofitting an old one, you must get a permit. And all commercial irrigation systems must have a sensor and be inspected annually.
\n\n\n\nThere are a few instances where the Twice A Week Smart Watering System does not apply:
\n\n\n\nViolating the City of Fort Worth’s regulations could cost you up to $2,000 for each offense, and each day you’re in violation counts as a separate offense. The city may even go a step further by locking in-ground irrigation systems for homeowners who break the rules. In addition to the fine, there’s a hefty fee to remove the lock-out device on your meter.

\n\n\n\nAny way you pronounce it (and Texans pronounce it with a soft “ahn” at the end), the pecan tree is the state tree of Texas. This native tree features beautiful green foliage and plenty of those delicious nuts. Pecan trees can grow up to 100 feet tall, and live to be quite old. This member of the hickory family is a staple in the area and would make a great addition to any North Texas home. It can spread wider than other native trees, so make sure that you have enough room to house this beauty for years to come.
\n\n\n\nAlso known as the Mexican flame, the hummingbird bush is a Texas native and a magnet for pollinators. This bush features bright red blooms that accentuate any Fort Worth garden. There is nothing quite like the stunning color of the purple berries that form on the American beautyberry bush. This native plant will grow to around 5 feet tall in favorable soil conditions. We recommend planting this native in a spot where you can enjoy the beautiful colors as well as the birds that will flock to it.

\n","content":"\nKeeping up with lawn maintenance can be tough in Central Texas. Not only is the climate hot year-round, but the worst weeds in your San Antonio lawn tend to grow faster than the grass…and some are harder to kill than others. Here are the worst weeds to look out for the next time you’re mowing:
\n\n\n\nThis notorious weed may seem simple enough with its small leaves and white flowers. But don’t let the appearance of chickweed fool you. This worst weed is hard to get rid of due to its ability to produce up to 15,000 seeds from just one plant! Chickweed can adapt and spread well all across the lawn, making it even harder to eradicate! You’ll find it growing in shaded parts of the yard where birds will visit it to eat the seeds.
\n\n\n\nThis broadleaf weed is easy to spot with its spiny leaves with jagged edges. Thistle looks a lot like a dandelion when it is small but will have a purple hue to it. Many homeowners consider thistle one of the worst weeds in your San Antonio lawn thanks to its quick growth rate and the amount of space it covers. When left untreated, thistle can grow tall and spread, blocking the grass underneath. Use gloves to pull out this sucker and make sure to get the entire root, so it doesn’t come back.

Known as the Dolly Parton weed, this persistent perennial blooms from 9 to 5, when the sun’s out. It’s hard to get rid of because of its low stems and many seedpods it produces. Purslane seeds sit in the soil year after year as well. This is an edible weed although most homeowners may not be thrilled about a Purslane salad. It also is tolerant of both drought and heat, making it a stubborn plant that won’t go without a fight. You’ll know you have this weed in the lawn by spotting its red stems and clover-like leaves. Pull the weed by the roots and make sure you get the seeds to prevent it from re-rooting.
\n\n\n\nGrassy weeds are harder to spot thanks to their close resemblance to the grass. But over time, crabgrass will spread and choke the grass underneath. This weed usually grows faster than the rest of the lawn and can take over if not eliminated. Spotting and taking out crabgrass is critical as one plant can produce thousands of seeds. Pull it out by the roots (use a trowel or spade) as soon as it appears. To prevent it from returning, use a pre-emergent herbicide at the beginning of spring.

This other grass weed is a common problem all throughout the San Antonio and New Braunfels area. Dallisgrass is harder to spot at first since it looks much like the surrounding turf. However, if you miss a mow or two, you’ll find that the Dallisgrass stands much taller than the rest of the lawn. This weed can grow quite large, and a single plant can smother the surrounding grass. It’s a common issue for manicured lawns like athletic fields and golf courses.
\n\n\n\nSpotting any of these weeds early is the key to keeping them out of your manicured lawn. Your best defense is regular mowing, watering, and fertilizing, so the weeds won’t find bare spots to seed.

Ground covers serve many purposes. They form a base layer in your landscape design that provides ground-level color and texture. They also shade the ground, which helps to conserve water. Silver ponyfoot is a beautiful, bright ground cover that forms a dense mat of tiny cup-shaped leaves. The leaves cascade over the edges of containers and terraces. Lyre-leaf sage is a hearty, flowering ground cover with evergreen leaves that’s often used around the bases of trees, as it performs well in sun or shade. Sedum is a succulent ground cover that tolerates poor soil. It comes in many shapes and sizes, flowers in the fall and blushes red in the winter.

Fig vine will cling to walls, forming a vertical evergreen carpet, even in part shade. Carolina jessamine creates a wall of foliage with yellow flowers that attract hummingbirds. Star jasmine features glossy leaves that withstand cold winters and fills the air with the sweetest fragrance. Crossvine and coral honeysuckle add color to walls, fences, and trellises. They also provide nectar for hummingbirds, bees, and birds throughout the seasons.

For seasonal interest that returns year after year, plant perennials in your landscape. Most of these plants are cut back to a few inches in the winter and return vigorously each spring. Esperanza, or yellow bells, throws out cheerful yellow or orange blooms that last throughout the hottest summer. Cast iron plants have blade-like, evergreen foliage that performs well in the shade. Bicolor iris forms tidy evergreen clumps with creamy, yellow flowers in spring and early summer. Purple coneflower and rock rose throw up pops of pink that draw butterflies. Duranta or skyflower is a dense perennial with deep purplish-blue flowers from summer to autumn.

Shrubs give landscapes color, texture, and often privacy and structure. Possumhaw holly lends a bit of flair to the yard with festive, red berries in the fall that persist even as the leaves drop off — to dramatic effect. Japanese aralia can give shaded areas a lush, tropical feel. Wooly butterfly bush is an unusual shrub featuring fuzzy, grayish leaves and bizarre orange flowers that butterflies flock to. Texas sage is a silvery-leafed shrub that blooms before rainstorms. That’s why it’s affectionately nicknamed “barometer bush.” Any number of roses, from antique climbers to the knockout cultivars can add fragrant, colorful flowers to your beds year-round.

\n\n\n\nWhen it comes to understory trees and bold autumn colors, there are a number of small native trees and shrubs that fit the bill. The Texas smoke tree has beautiful fall foliage and flowers that, once spent, display stunning, smoke-like poofs. Mexican redbuds burst into bright pink blooms in springtime. The flameleaf sumac erupts into brilliant flame-like colors in autumn.
This is a very short list to demonstrate the wonderful range of native plants and flowers available in Austin and Round Rock. There are far more natives than you may imagine. By getting back to our roots and with native plants in your landscape, you can spend less time working on the garden and more time enjoying it.

\n\n\n\nAnd lawns. Lots of lawns that need mowing watering and trimming. Here’s a guide to how to keep your Fort Worth lawn happy so you can spend more time on it, and more time enjoying the 13th-largest city in the United States.
\n\n\n\nFort Worth likes you to keep up the appearance of your lawn. In fact, it insists, in the form of a code compliance office that will issue you a notice if your grass is taller than 12 inches. Properties overgrown with high grass and weeds are not just unsightly, the city says, but “they pose a fire hazard, block visibility for driers, harbor rodents and snakes and contribute to pests like mosquitoes and chiggers.”
\n\n\n\nIgnore the notice for more than 10 days and the city will send out a crew to cut it for you. The cost: $250, payable within 30 days. Failure to pay can result in a lien being placed against the property.
\n\n\n\nIf your neighbor’s grass gets too high, the city makes it easy to file a complaint online.
\n\n\n\nBermudagrass and St. Augustinegrass are the most common grasses for lawns in Fort Worth. Zoysia varieties are also making their mark.
\n\n\n\nIn the mood for something more exotic? Texas-bred native grasses based on buffalograss have great drought tolerance, though the appearance is scruffily untraditional. The Botanical Research Institute of Texas in Fort Worth is one of many buildings experimenting with a buffalograss blend.
\n\n\n\nWarm-season grasses such as the ones that thrive in Fort Worth have their heaviest growth in the summer, so you’ll want to keep to a regular mowing schedule then. If you’re doing the job yourself in the 90+ degree heat, keep your mower blades sharp to prevent shredding that could injure your lawn.
\n\n\n\nMowing heights for different grass varieties are as follows:
\n\n\n\nIn the past, the typical practice was to remove lawn clippings and have them hauled to the landfill. That’s no longer the case, as lawn clippings are now seen as an important source of fertilizer for the lawn. On a typical lawn, leaving the clippings in place to decompose and return nitrogen to the soil for a full season added enough nutrients for you to skip one round of fertilization.
\n\n\n\nFort Worth’s climate is on the hot side, with average highs in the mid-90s in July and August. Expect about 40 inches of rain, with May, June and October the wettest months. That leaves a lot of hot, dry days in the mid to late summer in between, when your lawn will want a deep drink of water. But you’ll need to follow the city’s watering restrictions, imposed year-round to conserve the resource. Lawn irrigation by sprinkler or irrigation system is banned from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Penalties are stiff for violation: up to $2,000 for each offense.
\n\n\n\nBe polite and don’t mow too early or too late. The city has a noise ordinance. While it does not mention lawn mowers or leaf blowers specifically, it does bar “unreasonable noise,” especially at night.
