Here is what you need to know about protecting your sprinkler heads.
\n\n\n\n
Sprinkler donuts sound like something delicious, but they are actually a lot less fun than a donut with sprinkles. Sprinkler head donuts are a quick, inexpensive solution to damage from lawnmowers. You can choose between durable concrete donuts or plastic ones — either way, they are designed to prevent broken sprinkler heads. Keep in mind the concrete donuts may cost a little more, but they are tougher than the plastic ones, and they won’t float away in a heavy rain like the plastic donuts have been known to do.
\n\n\n\n
Your local landscaper may have installers who can put them in for you, but really it’s a DIY home improvement project. Your garden center or home improvement store should have the donuts, and only common garden tools are needed.
\n\n\n\n
Regardless of whether you do it yourself or hire someone, the donuts will save you the headache of replacing those lawn sprinkler heads.
\n\n\n\n

\n
8 Steps to Install Sprinkler Head Protection
\n\n\n\n

Measure the diameter of your sprinkler heads.

Buy sprinkler head donuts that are about an inch bigger than your sprinkler head diameter, so you should have about half an inch on either side.

Put the sprinkler donut over the spray head, centering the spray head.

Using a spade or trowel, cut about an inch and a half deep around the sprinkler donut.

Remove the plug of dirt and grass with a trowel.

Push the donut into the dirt with your hands, packing it in. Grass had to be manually trimmed near the sprinklers and occasionally one of the sprinklers was the victim of an inattentive worker on a mower. The ‘pop-up’ sprinkler was developed to alleviate this problem,” says the Clemson Cooperative Extension Home And Garden Information Center website.
\n\n\n\n
The other big threat to your pop-up sprinkler — or any watering method, like drip irrigation or even a faucet — is freezing temperatures. If water is left in the spray head when a hard freeze comes along, you could be looking at several broken sprinkler heads. The cardinal lawn care rule when frigid temperatures come along is to drain the water out of anything vulnerable.
\n\n\n\n
What to Do to Winterize Sprinklers
\n\n\n\n
Here are some things to do to prepare for pipe-bursting cold temperatures:
\n\n\n\n

Shut off the water to your sprinkler system

Shut off power to the controller

Drain the water left in the pipes with a manual pipe drain, or a compressed blow-out — which will clear water out of your sprinkler heads. You may consider calling a professional for a compressed air blow-out.

Insulate any pipes or valves that are above ground.

Pay attention to weather reports. Your local TV meteorologist will almost certainly warn you when a hard freeze is on the way, with an admonition to protect your “pets, pipes and plants”!

\n\n\n\n
A good sprinkler system is a significant and convenient part of lawn care, but it’s also a complicated system with a lot of parts vulnerable to damage. That damage is avoidable if you take the right measures. A few sprinkler head donuts and a good draining in the fall will help keep your sprinkler heads in good working order throughout the growing season.
\n\n\n\n
Main image credit: “Broken,” <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Daniel R. A little bit of DIY and TLC at the right time (usually the beginning of mowing season) will go a long way in making your mowing and lawn care smooth and easy, all season long.
\n\n\n\n
There are generally two kinds of lawn mowers. A push mower, which can be gas-powered, electric, or even human-powered. The gas-powered, small engine type is the most common. Riding mowers and lawn tractors are gas-powered, as well. They’re great for big yards that are either flat or have gently sloping hills. They tend to be more expensive and more complicated to maintain because they have more parts.
\n\n\n\n

\n
Lawn Mower Tune-Up Basics
\n\n\n\n

Change the oil.

Replace the spark plugs.

Replace or clean the air filter.

Sharpen the lawn mower blades.

Clean the undercarriage.

Drain the gas tank.

\n\n\n\n

\n

\n\n\n\n
Changing the Oil
\n\n\n\n
Dirt and other debris can get into the oil and gunk things up, so you’ll want to begin every mowing season with an oil change. You will remove the drain plug, if your mower has one, and let the oil drain out. If your mower doesn’t have a cap, you’ll need to tilt the mower to drain the oil through the fill hole. Check with your owner’s manual for the best kind of oil for your lawn mower.

\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n
Replace Spark Plugs
\n\n\n\n
If the seal on the old plug is leaking, replace it. You’ll also need to replace the spark plugs. The spark plug wires get worn, and that will affect the lawn mower’s ability to start the mower engine. The size of the spark depends on how wide the gap is — which is at the end of the spark plug. It’s a thin piece of metal that bends 90 degrees over the end of the plug. You can clean the gap if the lawn mower seems to sputter, or you can just buy a new plug and replace it.
\n\n\n\n
If your mower engine has the accordion-style paper filters, they’re easy to replace. If you have a foam filter, rinse it with a high powered hose and let it dry.
\n\n\n\n
Sharpen Blades
\n\n\n\n
An essential maintenance tip includes sharpening your mower blades at least once during every mowing season. Dull blades stress your grass by ripping and tearing the grass blades, instead of cleanly cutting. You can sharpen your own blades with a metal file and vice, but you’re probably better off letting a pro do it or buying new blades.
\n\n\n\n
Clean Underneath
\n\n\n\n

Credit: Electric mower underside, Hegwid Storch, CC by-SA 3.0

\n\n\n\n
While you’re at it, get rid of all the dirt and debris in the undercarriage. The grass clippings and debris can jam your mower’s discharge chute. Disconnect the spark plug first, to be on the safe side. A wire brush will loosen or remove most of the debris. Spray the rest out with a hose. It seems tedious, but it will make a difference to your lawn. The PennState Extension office warns, “Dull, improperly adjusted and dirty equipment not only destroys the aesthetic value of the turf by discoloration and bruising of the leaf tips, but also provides more ready access for disease organisms and insects through the damaged leaves.”
\n\n\n\n
If you’re too busy to DIY, take it to a pro. If you bought your lawn mower new, the store or dealership may offer maintenance service. You can also lookup lawn mower repair shops online and see which ones perform regular maintenance. Expect to pay between $50 to $100, depending on your type of mower.
\n\n\n\n
Drain Gas Tank
\n\n\n\n
Draining the gas tank is end-of-season maintenance. One of the biggest culprits, when a gas-powered lawn mower won’t start, is old gas. Drain whatever is left after the end of the mowing season, and start with a gas tank full of new fuel. Old oil and gas lose their effectiveness over time. Be sure to dispose of whatever you have left in your gas can, as well. This will eliminate a fire hazard in your garage.
\n\n\n\n
As with any piece of outdoor power equipment, make sure your lawn mower is off before you begin any maintenance or repairs. It’s also important to check the oil level periodically, usually by using the dipstick. We’ve come a long way since lawn mowers took a lot of muscle and patience to operate. But modern machines need maintenance to be able to cut the grass season after season. These lawn mower maintenance steps should keep your riding lawn mower or your push mower in action for years — especially if you read the owner’s manual for individual brand and model details.
\n","title":"Lawn Mower Maintenance: What You Need To Know","featured_media":{"localFile":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"aspectRatio":1.4992175273865416,"src":"/static/7a647c76441ccb217db4dce0c92e1c1d/86df2/man-working-on-his-lawnmower.jpg","srcSet":"/static/7a647c76441ccb217db4dce0c92e1c1d/107df/man-working-on-his-lawnmower.jpg 320w,\n/static/7a647c76441ccb217db4dce0c92e1c1d/293e9/man-working-on-his-lawnmower.jpg 500w,\n/static/7a647c76441ccb217db4dce0c92e1c1d/f2cbb/man-working-on-his-lawnmower.jpg 800w,\n/static/7a647c76441ccb217db4dce0c92e1c1d/86df2/man-working-on-his-lawnmower.jpg 958w","srcWebp":"/static/7a647c76441ccb217db4dce0c92e1c1d/a1d45/man-working-on-his-lawnmower.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/7a647c76441ccb217db4dce0c92e1c1d/67b76/man-working-on-his-lawnmower.webp 320w,\n/static/7a647c76441ccb217db4dce0c92e1c1d/8df11/man-working-on-his-lawnmower.webp 500w,\n/static/7a647c76441ccb217db4dce0c92e1c1d/98a65/man-working-on-his-lawnmower.webp 800w,\n/static/7a647c76441ccb217db4dce0c92e1c1d/a1d45/man-working-on-his-lawnmower.webp 958w","sizes":"(max-width: 958px) 100vw, 958px"}}}},"yoast_meta":{"yoast_wpseo_title":"Lawn Mower Maintenance: What You Need To Know | Wikilawn","yoast_wpseo_metadesc":""}}},{"node":{"id":"e2bbed9d-9766-5df7-a6c8-1ba4f2a29739","slug":"when-how-to-winterize-your-sprinkler-system","path":"/blog/home-and-garden/when-how-to-winterize-your-sprinkler-system/","status":"publish","template":"","format":"standard","author":{"description":"Jackie Greene is a blogger, gardener, and nutrition enthusiast. But the question of when to stop watering your lawn and winterize your sprinkler system is a little more complicated.
\n\n\n\n
Most of the country will see at least one deep freeze during the cold season. Many more will see freezing temperatures and snow through the winter months. The answer to when to shut off your sprinkler system for the season depends on the length of your growing season and the part of the country where you live. Lawns in Texas will need water until they go dormant in November. In Colorado, sprinkler systems run the risk of freezing by the end of September. Some cities and counties also restrict when and how long you can water.
\n\n\n\n
When the time does come, you will want to get your irrigation system ready for the harsh winter, so you won’t have any unpleasant, wet surprises.
\n\n\n\n

\n
5 Steps: How to Drain, Winterize Your Sprinkler System
\n\n\n\n

Find the manual drain valves located downstream of each zone valve.

Turn off the water supply by closing the main valve in the sprinkler valve box.

Open all the drain valves for each zone, and leave them open until all the remaining water drains from the pipes.

Lift and drain all sprinkler heads, even if you have an automatic draining system.

Close all the drain valves.

\n

\n\n\n\n
Alternative: The ‘Blow-Out’ Method
\n\n\n\n
You can also use the blowout method. you’ll need an air compressor, a quick-connect air hose adaptor, and eye protection. Close the main supply valve and the valves around the backflow device. Uncap the blow-out port, connect the quick-connect hose adaptor and attach the compressor hose.
\n\n\n\n
It’s important to have a pressure regulator and adjust to pressure to 40 psi if you have PVC pipes, and 50 psi if you have polyethylene pipes. Too much air pressure and the air will crack your pipes. You’ll want to blow out your sprinkler system zone by zone.
\n\n\n\n
Remember to wear eye protection. This will protect you in case one of the sprinkler heads pops off during the blowout. You want the sprinkler heads to pop up and push out any water remaining in your water line.
\n\n\n\n
If you’re not certain or intimidated by the idea of blowing out the sprinkler system yourself, you can hire a professional to do it. It should cost from $50 to $150, depending on how big your irrigation system is and where you are. If you plan to do it yourself, renting an air compressor can run you about $50, give or take a few bucks.
\n\n\n\n
After the water is expelled, you can turn things off for the season by cutting off the water supply at the main shut-off valve. It’s typically a ball valve with a lever. The shutoff valve will keep water from the main water supply from entering your pipes during the winter months.
\n\n\n\n
Keeping Faucets From Freezing
\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n
Outdoor faucets can freeze just as fast as sprinkler systems. Winterization is crucial if you don’t want to see burst pipes in early spring. Find the shut-off valve in your garage or basement and turn them off. Turn on all faucets to drain any water. Faucets in the southern half of the U.S. are often more vulnerable since Southern homes aren’t built for hard freezes. Since the pipes are often more exposed, one freeze can do a lot of damage. Consider buying faucet and pipe covers to insulate them during the winter — just in case.
\n\n\n\n
When to Turn the Sprinklers Off, Protect the Faucets
\n\n\n\n
If you walk outside in the morning and see frost, don’t confuse that with the killing freeze that ends the season. According to the National Weather Service, “Typically, frost can occur when the temperature falls below 36 degrees Fahrenheit, especially in rural areas. It is a localized phenomenon and can be quite variable across a small area. While the National Weather Service does not keep track of ‘frost’ in observations per se, we do keep track of when temperatures hit the freezing mark or fall below.”
\n\n\n\n
Meteorologists define a hard freeze as occurring at 28 degrees Fahrenheit. That’s the start of the pipe-busting kind of freezing cold weather and the kind of cold that can kill plants. It can also take out a sprinkler valve or two.
\n\n\n\n
It usually arrives in the first 10 days of September in the upper altitudes of the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. In Key West, Fla., you can expect the first freeze on the 10th of Never (there has never even been frost, let alone sleet or ice, in America’s southernmost city). Your local TV meteorologist will tell you in no uncertain terms that a hard freeze is in the forecast, and you need to protect your pipes, pets, plants.
\n\n\n\n
Protecting your pipes and winterizing your lawn sprinkler system is crucial in parts of the country that see hard freezes during the winter months, and that includes most of the US. It’s easy to keep track of what areas have already had their first freezes, thanks to the Midwestern Regional Climate Center, which tracks first freezes as part of its Vegetation Impact Program. Your neighbor’s perfect lawn and crisp edges might make you jealous, but with a few simple tools, a little patience, and a lot of practice, you can achieve the clean lines of perfect edging. Here are some DIY techniques professional landscapers use to give flower beds and walkways that manicured lawn look you envy.
\n\n\n\n
‘Cutting Edge’ Tools You May Need
\n\n\n\n
String Trimmer: A quality power edger is an investment, so do your research and don’t skimp on this purchase. Gas trimmers are heavy but ideal for large yards, while electric trimmers are lighter and more eco-friendly. A straight shaft will give you a longer reach and better ability to cut curves than a curved shaft.
\n\n\n\n
Manual Edging Tool: This tool looks a little bit like a shovel but has a flat, half-moon edger blade. For small yards or an aversion to power tools, this tool is the answer.
\n\n\n\n
Manual Rotary Edger: This one looks like a stick with a spiky wheel at its end. The spikes are rotating blades that shear off grass in a line. Used to manually edge grass at the edge of sidewalks or other hardscape surfaces. Good for small lawns with thin-bladed grass varieties.
\n\n\n\n
Hand Shears: For the finishing touches, trimming grass in hard-to-mow spots.
\n\n\n\n
Garden Hose or Rope: Use to mark out the edge if you are making new garden beds and need a guide.
\n\n\n\n
A Plank of Wood: You’ll only need this if you are using a manual edger to do the job.
\n\n\n\n
Lawn Edging Methods
\n\n\n\n
There are only a few ways to go about edging a lawn: using a power edger or weed eater, using a manual edging tool, or a combination of both. String trimmers sometimes come with edger attachments that can make short work of overgrown grass spilling into walkways and flower beds. These power tools can make the job easier. They can also make a big mess of an edge in no time if you’re not skilled at using them. Here are some tips for both methods.
\n\n\n\n

\n
Tips for Power Edging
\n\n\n\n
Power edging is more hardcore than manual edging and requires a little more caution. Follow these steps for a safe, successful experience:
\n\n\n\n

Wear boots, pants, protective goggles or glasses and earplugs. You may want to add gloves. If you have pollen allergies a face mask.

Mow the lawn first to reduce the volume you’ll have to edge.

Flip the head of your string trimmer or edger so that it is vertical.

Hold the trimmer at the same level and position for a consistent trim.

Go slowly, moving from left to right (power edgers spin clockwise) so that debris moves away from your path.

Slow the trimmer speed on curves to maintain accuracy.

Use hand shears to tidy up stray blades of grass.

Sweep up the debris, wipe the tool clean.

\n

\n\n\n\n
Manual Edging
\n\n\n\n
Mowing with a lawn mower is always the first step in edging. If you are edging in a straight line, you can use a board as a guide. Before you begin, make sure the blade is sharp. If it isn’t, grab a file and go to work.
\n\n\n\n
With your sharp tool in hand, lay your board along the outside of the straight edge you want to cut. Stand on top of the board with one foot to secure it, and then drive the half-moon edger a couple of inches into the turf, using the edge of the board as a guide. If you’re edging against pavers or a sidewalk, you may come up against the edge, cutting a wedge-shaped bit of turf and earth as you go. Rock the edging blade back and forth and then scoop out the grass and dirt you’ve cut away, depositing them out out of the way to be collected later.
\n\n\n\n
Keep a consistent angle by using the board edge as a guide, and make sure the blade stays nice and sharp. Susan Harris of Behnke Nursery recommends edging garden beds to avoid high-maintenance mowing around pavers and stone borders. “It’s called a Victorian Trench,” she says. “It does what edging needs to do — holds back the lawn from the garden and the garden from the lawn — without being an eyesore in the garden.” If you’re manually edging along a curved edge, you’ll want to overlap your cuts and double your depth, cutting to a maximum of 6 inches. When you’re finished with flower bed edges, backfill the trench you’ve dug with mulch for a clean, weed-resistant edge.
\n\n\n\n
While it may seem like a lot of work, edging, like aerating and fertilizing should be a part of your lawn care routine. It gives your yard a tidy, professionally managed look and feel, and instantly increases your curb appeal.
\n","title":"How to Edge a Lawn","featured_media":{"localFile":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"aspectRatio":1.3333333333333333,"src":"/static/cd8f28f8891294bf820abc65435ec04c/1789c/jack-edging.jpg","srcSet":"/static/cd8f28f8891294bf820abc65435ec04c/107df/jack-edging.jpg 320w,\n/static/cd8f28f8891294bf820abc65435ec04c/293e9/jack-edging.jpg 500w,\n/static/cd8f28f8891294bf820abc65435ec04c/f2cbb/jack-edging.jpg 800w,\n/static/cd8f28f8891294bf820abc65435ec04c/1789c/jack-edging.jpg 960w,\n/static/cd8f28f8891294bf820abc65435ec04c/356ef/jack-edging.jpg 1280w","srcWebp":"/static/cd8f28f8891294bf820abc65435ec04c/1dd6e/jack-edging.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/cd8f28f8891294bf820abc65435ec04c/67b76/jack-edging.webp 320w,\n/static/cd8f28f8891294bf820abc65435ec04c/8df11/jack-edging.webp 500w,\n/static/cd8f28f8891294bf820abc65435ec04c/98a65/jack-edging.webp 800w,\n/static/cd8f28f8891294bf820abc65435ec04c/1dd6e/jack-edging.webp 960w,\n/static/cd8f28f8891294bf820abc65435ec04c/93f70/jack-edging.webp 1280w","sizes":"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px"}}}},"yoast_meta":{"yoast_wpseo_title":"How to Edge a Lawn | Wikilawn","yoast_wpseo_metadesc":""}}},{"node":{"id":"d83f622e-8d9b-5590-8f22-0eca0edf7db0","slug":"lawn-aeration-diy-vs-hiring-professional","path":"/blog/lawn-aeration-diy-vs-hiring-professional/","status":"publish","template":"","format":"standard","author":{"description":"Bob Greenly has been mowing and caring for lawns since he was 12 years old. You have to know when and how to aerate and make sure you poke enough holes in your lawn to let it breathe. Should you do it yourself, or are you better off hiring a professional? Here are the pros and cons of DIY lawn aeration vs. hiring a professional.
\n\n\n\n
Why You Should Aerate
\n\n\n\n

A simple pitchfork can aerate a small area quickly and easily.

\n\n\n\n
Your lawn may need to be aerated for any of several reasons. First among them: compaction, when the soil particles are pressed together into a smaller area. Soil compaction leaves less room for air and water to get to the roots.
\n\n\n\n
It is common in areas that have clay soil, or on new lawns where construction activity tamps down the soil, or any lawn that gets a lot of foot traffic.
\n\n\n\n
A thick layer of thatch can also be a reason to aerate. Thatch is the natural organic matter between the soil and the green blades of grass. A little thatch is necessary and healthy for your lawn. Too much thatch can lead to pest problems and prevent water and air from getting to the grass roots. If your lawn feels spongy underfoot, you may have too much thatch. Bend low and inspect: If the matted brown layer under your green grass blades is more than a half-inch, you may need to aerate.
\n\n\n\n
Aeration removes pokes holes in your lawn, allowing precious air and water to get down into the roots. It can also loosen the soil, and encourage the grass roots to grow deeper and spread, making your lawn healthier.
\n\n\n\n

\n
4 Pros, 4 Cons of Aerating Your Own Lawn
\n\n\n\n
4 Pros
\n\n\n\n

You can aerate on your own schedule instead of waiting for a pro.

You can water your own lawn if you need to. Aeration works best when the soil is moist.

You can decide how many times to run the aeration machine over the lawn, and hit especially compacted soil many times.

You save money renting the machine yourself.

\n\n\n\n
4 Cons
\n\n\n\n

It’s backbreaking work. Aeration machines are heavy.

The pros have the right equipment, so you don’t have to guess what kind of aeration machine to rent or buy.

The pros have experience. They will know how to take care of your lawn, post-aeration, to keep it healthy.

The cost of renting a lawn aeration machine may be equal to paying a professional.

\n

\n\n\n\n
If You Decide to Do It Yourself…
\n\n\n\n
Aerate during the peak of your lawn’s growing season. Cool-season grasses such as Kentucky bluegrass should be aerated in the spring, and early fall, but warm-season grasses such as St. Augustinegrass need aerating in the late spring or early summer.
\n\n\n\n
Start with soil that’s not too dry. Aerating the day after a rain, or after watering is best.
\n\n\n\n
Don’t clean up the plugs of soil; leave them to break down and return the nutrients to the soil.
\n\n\n\n
Core? Tines? Spikes? Which Type of Aeration Should I Do?
\n\n\n\n

Spikes that strap on the bottom of your shoes are among the least expensive forms of aeration. You’ll get a workout, but they’re not as effective as a core aeration machine.

\n\n\n\n
If you do it yourself, you have a choice of aeration techniques. Some are engine-powered machines, some simple tools. All of them share one essential task: poking holes in your lawn.
\n\n\n\n
Experts consider core aerators to be superior. Core aeration machines can be purchased or rented for the day or the weekend to get the job done. This will pull out plugs of thatch and soil, allowing oxygen to get down to the roots. Core aeration is also a must in clay soil, where the soil compacts easily. Pulling the plugs out of the ground is the best way to achieve a healthy lawn.
\n\n\n\n
A spike aerator punches holes in your lawn with solid metal tines. You can even find spike aerators that strap onto your shoes. This allows you to march around your lawn, sans machine.
\n\n\n\n
Words of Aeration Caution
\n\n\n\n

Make sure you know where cables are buried before aerating.

If you have an in-ground irrigation system, make sure you know where the sprinkler heads are located.

If you’re planning to overseed, do it after aeration. This allows the new grass to take advantage of the oxygen and water that should be flowing more freely.

Put down a pre-emergent herbicide for weed control after aeration, unless you plan on overseeding. The weed killer could prevent new seed from germinating.

\n\n\n\n
This last point is crucial because it could save you from making an expensive mistake.
\n\n\n\n
Dr. Kevin Frank with the Michigan State University Extension Department on Crop and Soil Sciences warns, “Also be aware of any other underground lines, e.g., invisible dog fence wire. These lines should be buried deep enough to avoid any trouble, but it never hurts to double-check.”
\n\n\n\n
You Win Either Way
\n\n\n\n
Whether you do it yourself, or you have a lawn service aerate, you will be performing a task vital to your lawn’s health. Every living being on the planet needs oxygen and water to survive, and your grass is no different. Aeration provides the roots of your lawn access to both, leaving your lawn greener, thicker and more beautiful.
\n\n\n\n
Main image credit: Wikimedia, CC 3.0
\n","title":"Lawn Aeration: DIY Vs. Light reflects differently on grass bent in one direction than in the other.
\n\n\n\n
Keep that basic principle in mind. Everything else you do, from choosing grass variety to mowing equipment, will be done to increase the amount of bend and cause it to hold longer.
\n\n\n\n

\n
6 Steps to Striping a Lawn
\n\n\n\n

Mow a border around the edge of your lawn.

Choose a direction, e.g. go north-south or east-west.

Mow the full length of the lawn, parallel to a border line, for the first full stripe.

When you reach the border on the other side, lift the mower deck and turn the mower around before lowering the deck.

Mow a new stripe next to the last one.

Repeat as needed.

\n

\n\n\n\n
Regular Mowers Won’t Cut It (as Well)
\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n
You don’t have to go out and buy an expensive new lawn mower, but you do need to know what you’re up against. Major League Baseball field crews don’t use typical household mowers. MLB literally wrote the book on lawn striping, and according to the official manual, rotary push lawnmowers only work on residential lawns. At the pro baseball field, it’s most likely a reel mower. “Reel mowers are more specialized and are used on higher maintenance facilities like golf courses and athletic fields. These mowers require additional training to operate. Reel mowers are used to provide better quality cuts and allows very low cutting heights,” the manual says.
\n\n\n\n
Lawn Rollers
\n\n\n\n
While you don’t need to run out and buy a reel mower, you will need a lawn roller. A striping kit and sharp mower blades will also put you in the ballpark with the big league lawn stripers. These kits come complete with mounting hardware.
\n\n\n\n

You can find them at home improvement stores or on Amazon.

It will cost around $100 – $150 for a decent one.

Make sure you buy a roller that’s compatible with your lawn mower. It should be labeled.

You may have to fill it with sand or water to provide the weight needed to get your grass to lay down in the direction of the lawn roller.

\n\n\n\n
Grass Types, Mowing Height Matter
\n\n\n\n
Not all grass is created equal when it comes to striping, and your technique must vary with the seasons. The grasses that take to striping the best are cool-season varieties such as fine fescue and Kentucky bluegrass. They have long, flexible blades that easily bend in the direction of the lawn roller. Warm-season grasses such as St. Augustine have more rigid blades that spring back from the lawn roller. If your lawn consists of the stiffer warm-season kind, it’s more likely to bed and lie flat in the spring and fall, when the temperatures are a little lower. In the peak of the summer heat, those grass blades are less likely to lay how you want them. Keep in mind that cool-season grasses thrive best in spring and early fall. You’re also likely to get the best results from those varieties when the temperatures aren’t soaring into their July and August peaks.
\n\n\n\n
Mowing height is another major factor in lawn striping. Experts say never mow your lawn too closely, or you risk the health of the grass. Grass that has been scalped also tends to be less green. If you want to stripe your lawn, you have another reason to let it grow a little longer. The longer the blades of grass, the more distinct your stripes will be. That’s because there is more grass blade to lay in one direction and reflect light. Generally, you should keep your lawn between 2.5 to 4 inches long if you want that fancy design.
\n\n\n\n
Bonus: For a Checkerboard Pattern
\n\n\n\n

Using the directions above, mow your lawn into basic stripes.

Once you complete the stripes, mow new stripes over the first stripes, but at a 90-degree angle.

\n\n\n\n
There’s even more you can do with your grass if you have the inclination. Lawn stripe patterns are limited only by your imagination, the size and shape of your lawn and your lawn mower. Consider waves, circles, even an argyle-like pattern.
