If you can’t remember when you last changed the oil, it’s probably overdue. But what type of oil does your lawn mower take? That depends on the lawn mower engine, the size of the mower, and the mower type. There is no one-size-fits-all answer.
\n\n\n\n
When Does my Lawnmower Need an Oil Change?
\n\n\n\n
New mowers may need an oil change after the first 10 hours of use. Check your operator’s manual to make sure. Generally, lawn mowers need an oil change every 25 to 50 hours of lawn care. Always check the oil level with the dipstick in the middle of summer, to see where the oil level is and whether your lawn mower could use a top-off.
\n\n\n\n
Types of Lawn Mower Oil
\n\n\n\n
There are two types of oil for lawn mowers: motor oil and small engine oil. Briggs & Stratton, the largest producer of engines for outdoor equipment, found 48 percent of people surveyed believe automotive oil and small engine oil are the same. They are not. There are some major differences between the two, and you shouldn’t use them interchangeably. “Air-cooled engines run hotter than automotive engines,” says Kevin Wenger Sr., owner of Wenger Equipment in Athens, Wisc. He adds, “The oil temperature in a small engine can reach 280-300 degrees Fahrenheit … nearly 100 degrees hotter than the oil in a typical car.” Small engine oil is designed for high-temperature environments and protects the engine from overheating.
\n\n\n\n
Motor Oil
\n\n\n\n
Motor oil is designed for larger motors typical of automobiles, riding mowers, and deluxe push mowers. You can buy this type of oil at gas stations, hardware stores, and auto parts stores. While some mower owners believe regular engine oil is acceptable for lawn mowers, they could be damaging the engine.
\n\n\n\n
Motor oil meant for automobiles and tractors has a high viscosity. The thick fluid may clog up your push mower, causing irreversible damage. A good mower is an investment, and the last thing you want to do is ruin it doing some routine maintenance.
\n\n\n\n
Motor oil meant for automobiles and tractors has a high viscosity. A good mower is an investment, and the last thing you want to do is ruin it doing some routine maintenance.
\n\n\n\n
Small Engine Oil
\n\n\n\n
Two-stroke engines– common in outdoor power equipment such as chainsaws, weed trimmers, snowblowers, and push mowers– need small engine oil. The reason is simple: a two-cycle engine doesn’t have separate compartments for oil and gasoline. The result is a louder, smokier machine that doesn’t stall under various types of engine load. It also means that owners have to mix the fuel and oil before adding it to the tank.
\n\n\n\n
The gas and oil are mixed at a ratio of 32:1 or 50:1, depending on the machine. Check your owner’s manual to make sure you have the right ratio. Small engine oil, also known as two-stroke oil, is lightweight to ensure even-mixing and smooth engine operation. You’ll find it at any auto parts store or in the garden section of a hardware store.
\n\n\n\n
All engine oil is rated by viscosity. You’ll find that number on the label. Find the number and follow these steps for finding the right oil type.
\n\n\n\n

\n
6 Ways to Pick the Right Lawn Mower Oil
\n\n\n\n

Check your operator’s manual to see if the manufacturer recommends motor oil or small engine oil; look for the viscosity recommendation.

Choose an SAE 30 oil if you live in an area with warmer temperatures (over 40º F).

Choose an SAE 10W-30 oil if you live in an area with a wide temperature range (0-100º F).

Choose a synthetic oil (SAE 5W-30) for much colder temperatures (below 40º), and very high temperatures (up to 120º).

Choose a heavy-duty synthetic oil, such as Vanguard 15W-50, for continuous use, such as commercial lawn mowing or mowing many acres at a time.

Look for a high-quality detergent oil classified “For Service SF, SG, SH, SJ” or higher.

\n

\n\n\n\n
The Bottom Line
\n\n\n\n
Choosing the right oil for your lawn mower will help you to avoid engine problems and can contribute to many years of hassle-free mowing. When you treat your mower well, it will respond by treating your lawn well. A smooth-running mower lets you get the job done and spend more time enjoying your lawn than taking care of it.
\n","title":"Lawn Mower Oil: How to Pick the Right Type","featured_media":{"localFile":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"aspectRatio":1.5005861664712778,"src":"/static/4ab0ea9fc8a2f69ef78606b3d7170863/1789c/rsz_17506-a-man-working-on-his-lawnmower-or.jpg","srcSet":"/static/4ab0ea9fc8a2f69ef78606b3d7170863/107df/rsz_17506-a-man-working-on-his-lawnmower-or.jpg 320w,\n/static/4ab0ea9fc8a2f69ef78606b3d7170863/293e9/rsz_17506-a-man-working-on-his-lawnmower-or.jpg 500w,\n/static/4ab0ea9fc8a2f69ef78606b3d7170863/f2cbb/rsz_17506-a-man-working-on-his-lawnmower-or.jpg 800w,\n/static/4ab0ea9fc8a2f69ef78606b3d7170863/1789c/rsz_17506-a-man-working-on-his-lawnmower-or.jpg 960w,\n/static/4ab0ea9fc8a2f69ef78606b3d7170863/356ef/rsz_17506-a-man-working-on-his-lawnmower-or.jpg 1280w","srcWebp":"/static/4ab0ea9fc8a2f69ef78606b3d7170863/1dd6e/rsz_17506-a-man-working-on-his-lawnmower-or.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/4ab0ea9fc8a2f69ef78606b3d7170863/67b76/rsz_17506-a-man-working-on-his-lawnmower-or.webp 320w,\n/static/4ab0ea9fc8a2f69ef78606b3d7170863/8df11/rsz_17506-a-man-working-on-his-lawnmower-or.webp 500w,\n/static/4ab0ea9fc8a2f69ef78606b3d7170863/98a65/rsz_17506-a-man-working-on-his-lawnmower-or.webp 800w,\n/static/4ab0ea9fc8a2f69ef78606b3d7170863/1dd6e/rsz_17506-a-man-working-on-his-lawnmower-or.webp 960w,\n/static/4ab0ea9fc8a2f69ef78606b3d7170863/93f70/rsz_17506-a-man-working-on-his-lawnmower-or.webp 1280w","sizes":"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px"}}}},"yoast_meta":{"yoast_wpseo_title":"Lawn Mower Oil: How to Pick the Right Type | Wikilawn","yoast_wpseo_metadesc":""}}},{"node":{"id":"78bb6f71-cafd-59a5-9846-b66b61a68be7","slug":"upcycle-old-fence-panels","path":"/diy/upcycle-old-fence-panels/","status":"publish","template":"","format":"standard","author":{"description":"","name":"Wikilawn","id":"706a455e-0b9c-56ea-aeed-4f411c6c1973","path":"/author/wikilawn/","avatar_urls":{"wordpress_96":"https://secure.gravatar.com/avatar/fd0301960c52ded452e0b5fc145cb264?s=96&d=mm&r=g"}},"categories":[{"id":"2157bb2b-3c30-51d8-a48c-83df1b898b6c","name":"DIY","count":2,"path":"/category/diy/"}],"date":"October 28th, 2014","excerpt":"
No matter how hard you work to preserve your fence, there will come a time when certain fence panels become broken or too worn out to continue their purpose. It can be very annoying having to replace your fence and then having the broken ones lying around, so why not consider upcycling your fence panels. This allows you to get more use out of your fence panels and you may find they are very useful for something you never even knew you needed. You should look on an old fence panel as a few pieces of wood and from there think of all the wooden items you have/need. This is much easier that simply thinking of reusing fences. Here are some ideas to get the ball rolling in your mind, but you may be able to think of many more that are more specific to your needs so start thinking of innovative new ways to prolong the life of your fence panels.
\n
Construct useful wooden boxes from old fence panels
\n

\n
Traditional Landscape by North Ridgeville Landscape Contractors Lifestyle Landscaping, Inc.
\n
Although these wood panels may no longer be suitable as a barrier around your garden, they may still be viable in your outdoors area. You can use the panels to construct wooden boxes of various sizes and for various uses. For this kind of endeavour you are likely to want to have a handsaw, nails or screws, and a hammer or a screwdriver (preferably electric). It will also be useful to have rulers, pencils and tape measures to ensure that you can get a neat looking box that all fits together well. Making an open topped box is relatively simple and you can use it to hold flowers and plants.
\n
Make outdoor furniture from used fence panels
\n

\n
Eclectic Patio by New York Landscape Architects & Landscape Designers Susan Cohan, APLD
\n
Furniture for inside such as tables, chairs and outdoor furniture can all be constructed from the remnants of an old fence with a certain degree of skill and a lot of hard work and dedication. This is likely to be a big project to undertake but it will be worth it if you are able to pull it off. You will need to make precise measurements in order to ensure that any furniture you build is safe and you might want to look into paints, varnishes and extra coats to add to the wood to make it more comfortable to sit on or at. There are a lot of different designs of chairs and tables out there so be sure to properly evaluate how much wood you have and what you yourself will be able to make; if this is your first time doing any woodwork, it will probably be best to stick to a simple design as opposed to any carving or intricate shaping work.
\n
Design picture frames from fence panels
\n

\n
Traditional Kids by Crowley Media & Bloggers The Virginia House
\n
If your old fence panels are still in relatively good condition appearance wise, they could be used to make cheap and attractive picture frames. Like most of the projects mentioned above, this is all about sizing but it is still a relatively simple task to undertake. You are likely to need measuring tools, a handsaw, sandpaper, a hammer and maybe a paintbrush and some paint.
\n
Create garden decor from fence panels
\n

\n
Contemporary Entry
\n
Wooden welcome signs can add a very cosy and homely feel to a building, so why not try utilising your old fence panels in this way? These can be constructed in a similar way to picture frames and using similar tools, but allow for more creativity through the decoration of the sign once you have created your wooden base.
\n
Recycle old fence panels
\n

\n
Contemporary Patio
\n
If you are less adventurous with your upcycles, you can always just store your fence panels somewhere dry so that you can use them to fix up other panels. It is likely that some of the wood will be salvageable so in the future, you could use this to mend parts of other fence panels if they too begin to wear away or break. In fact, if you want a more kitsch and unique look for your garden, you could use the wood from old fence panels on new fence panels that are a different colour or different kind of wood to create a kind of patchwork design. Some people have even been able to use these old panels to make a gate on the fence, so there are a lot of ways to upcycle old fence panels into your existing fence.
\n
Fencestore is a great website to know when you need to buy new fences to replace all the old fence panels that you have upcycled.
\n
Upcycling your old fence panels can turn out to be great for your wallet, great for the environment and great for whatever you end up using them for, so be sure to consider trying out some woodwork and making the most of those old, unused fences.\t\t
\n","title":"5 DIY Ideas to Upcycle Your Old Fence Panels","featured_media":null,"yoast_meta":{"yoast_wpseo_title":"5 DIY Ideas to Upcycle Your Old Fence Panels","yoast_wpseo_metadesc":"It can be very annoying having to replace your fence and then having the broken ones lying around, so why not consider upcycling your fence panels."}}}],"metaTitle":"Everything You Need to Know About DIY Page % Page | Wikilawn %","metaDescription":"Looking for info on DIY ?
