The plant produces a profusion of plush, trumpet-shaped indigo blue flowers splashed with bright white speck. Think the nighttime sky filled with glittering stars. Incredibly, no two flowers are alike. The starlike appearance is due to the difference in temperature between daytime and nighttime. The plants need warm in the daytime and much cooler at night.This sun-loving plant grows to 10 to 16 inches and blooms from May through September with pointy green leaves that gently spill from the container.

\nThis flower is named after the vivid red color of the Roman Catholic cardinal’s robe. The brilliant red of the flowers bloom when most other perennials are fading in the summer heat.The tall spikes of exotic, brilliant red, trumpet-shaped flowers rise above rich green, lance-shaped leaves tinged with bronze.
\nThe cardinal flower plant, which can grow to four feet high, overflows with blooms during summer and sometimes into early fall. The Cardinal Flower can be grown in perennial borders but can also be naturalized and grown in wildflower meadows. Since the trumpet shaped flowers have long necks, it depends on the hummingbird for fertilization, so it’s the perfect plant for a hummingbird garden.
\nPruning it will bring about a second round of flowers. Or, if you want them to spread, let the seeds fall to the ground for self-sowing. If you want seedling, you will need to pull back the mulch so the seedlings can grow.

The Celosia ‘Intenz’ is easy to maintain as long as it has its place in the sun. The flamboyant flowers, startling reddish-violet plumes, bloom all summer long and add remarkable texture as well as the intense color to the container arrangement. It’s considered drought tolerant and is a great choice for an xeriscape application or a low water garden. But, if it’s in a container or basket, it may need more frequent watering.
\nThe plant is compact, only 10 to 14 inches tall, and its upright growth makes it compatible with any number of plants. For a real showstopper, combine it with the lime-green of ‘Envy’ zinnias. ‘Intenz’ doesn’t need pruning as such, simply pick off the old flowers as they begin to fade to keep the plant looking tidy.
\nCarrie Engel, a greenhouse manager, says the Intenz line will stand up to Maryland’s summer’s. “They are great for July, August when it’s still hot outside.”

\nThe blue mist shrub is light and airy with clusters of powder-blue flowers and blue-green leaves from late summer to early fall. The leaves are further enhanced by their silver undersides. This shrub has a fine texture that makes it stand out from the “crowd,” and is used to its best advantage in the center of the container surrounded by smaller plants. The blue mist wants to be in the sun as much as possible. It’s drought tolerant so it only requires the average amount of water but if it’s over fertilized, it will become disorderly and overblown. Only prune it when it begins to grow leaves in the spring. In fact, the entire shrub can be cut back to the ground, which will give it a more even shape and livens it up. The Blue Mist Shrub can grow to three feet tall and has an average lifespan of 20 years.

\nField conditions across the NFL will always vary due to climate and human logistics, so it’s natural that players may have different perspectives on what surface type best sets them up for success. But what does the data say?
\nWe calculated the winning percentage from each team over the last 10 seasons, including the current one, and divided them into two categories based on their home stadium: natural grass and artificial turf.
\nHybrid systems like GrassMaster that use real grass reinforced with artificial fibres are included in the natural grass category. An example of this type of playing surface can be found at the Green Bay Packers’ famed Lambeau Field.
\nFor teams like the Ravens that switched playing surfaces during the 10-year period, we counted each playing surface as a separate team. And ties are considered losses because this is football, dang it, not soccer.
\nWhich surface reigns supreme in recent history? With a winning percentage of .525, teams that play their home games on artificial turf handily beat their natural grass counterparts, who have a combined winning percentage of .474.

It’s no surprise that the Patriots stand head and shoulders above the rest, even after they had to replace their synthetic turf this season after player complaints. Their absurd .768 winning percentage single handedly raised the combined turf teams’ combined average up nearly two points.
\nOn the flip side, the Browns’ debacle of a decade not only earned them last place with a truly wretched .237 winning percentage, but dragged the entire winning percentage of the natural grass teams down two points.
\nRemoving those two outliers and you have a more even matchup: .507 for teams with natural grass home fields versus .491 for teams playing on artificial turf.

The data also doesn’t always tell the full story. For examples, the Steelers have often succeeded in spite of their frequently criticized field, most infamous for the “mud punt.”
\n\nAnd players come down strongly in favor of natural grass. An NFL Players Association poll taken in 2010 showed that 89.7% said artificial turf is more likely to shorten their career, 89.1% said they are more sore after playing on that synthetic surface, and 82.4% said fake grass is more likely to contribute to an injury. However, players also voted the frequently muddy grass in Pittsburgh’s Heinz Field the worst in the NFL.
\nOf the four teams remaining in this year’s NFL playoffs, the Eagles and Jaguars play on natural grass (GrassMaster hybrid surface and Tifway 419 Bermuda Grass, respectively) while the Patriots and Vikings use turf to maintain playing conditions throughout their cold winters (FieldTurf and UBU Speed Series S5-M).

\n","content":"Ever wondered how your perfect neighbor down the street has a top-notch lawn at the beginning of every spring? Maybe the guy is a former landscaper at Augusta National Golf Club. Or maybe he sold his soul in exchange for the best lawn in your whole county, annually.
\nI’m sure you’d like to believe one of those possibilities. But most likely, the man simply stays on top of his yard work during the winter time. He is prepared. His reward is not struggling during March and April in order to get his Bermuda lawn back under control.
\nWhile you are missing your kid’s ball games and skipping lake trips to fight off all manner of weeds, “Mr. Yard of the Month” has plenty of time to relax and enjoy his property.
\nSo let’s continue your streak of terrible yard experiences each and every year. Use these tips to make your spring lawn care as miserable as possible, or avoid the satire and follow these laughable statements as what to easily not do.
\nYou know deep down that your Toro mower is not designed to be a wood chipper. But you just can’t help yourself. So keep leaving those fallen tree limbs and branches all over the yard.
\nEven if you don’t want to destroy your mower deck and blades, surely you enjoy picking up limbs on the first sunny day in April, right? It sure beats a trip to your favorite hiking trail.
\nPro tip: It would be a good idea to prune any weak looking limbs during the winter so they don’t add to the fallen branches. Also, protect your eyeballs and prevent concussions. Go ahead and trim those limbs you’ve banged your head on for the past decade.

\nFor me, there is nothing better than saving money with low effort. I don’t like handing hard-earned cash over to the mower repair shop.
\nBut since you want to cause yourself plenty of stress when the flowers bloom, don’t dare winterize your lawn equipment.
\nPro tip: A couple of repair guys told me that ethanol resulted in about 80 percent of their work.
\nNobody has time for fun in the sun come May. Keep yourself busy with nonsense like cleaning out those gutters full of November leaves. Sure, you could have cleaned them out easier when they were 100 percent leaf material. Now they are wet and resemble potting soil as they decomposed over the winter. Have fun with the rubber gloves.
\nAnd most lawn procrastinators will toss the gutter debris right on the grass. That’s a great way to kill off spots of turf as the debris weighs down the young blades of grass.
\nSince you like testing yourself, let those lawn pests build up for a fight. No need battling a few ants when you can let them form an army over the winter.
\nPro tip: Fire ants may be coming to your area soon. They are found in 17 U.S. states currently and only cause $1.2 billion in damage each year.
\nDon’t bother using these tricks to get a jump on lawn pests:
\nYour neighbor with the lush lawn likes pre-emergent herbicides to keep weeds away. But you wouldn’t want to bother with that in the winter. You have better things to do, like watch 23 meaningless college football bowl games.
\nPre-emergents work gradually so they are used by homeowners with patience. Guys who don’t use them end up using post-emergents all spring and summer. It’s a giant time-suck!

\nLeaves in the flower beds may look festive in the fall, but not in December. It’s a miserable chore to get those soggy leaves out of mulch beds in March. Dry leaves can be blown easily with a blower in the fall. But be prepared to get your hands dirty and blistered with a rake once they have been in the beds for three long months.
\nA proper lawn guy would wait no later than mid-November to clean those flower beds up. You want to have a neat yard when the family visits on Thanksgiving anyway.
\nIt can cost you a pile of money to buy yard tools that you only use once per year. Do you really need a 10-foot extendable gas-powered chainsaw very often? It would be a good plan to get together with five of your buddies from the neighborhood and create a tool co-op. This setup allows you all to use each other’s tools. Most homeowners don’t need ten different lawn tools. Share and save money.
\nBy the way, this is another way to stay connected to your neighbors. Flying solo is unhealthy mentally. Be the lone wolf and enjoy the misery. Or join the pack so you can break your tool addiction.
\nWinter time is a good opportunity to adapt to “The Great Outdoors” of your backyard. If you can come up with ways to enjoy the patio when it’s really cold, then you can enjoy the days in April – September with less than perfect weather. Storms and cold fronts also come in the warmer seasons.
\nBut if you love misery, just stay piled up on the couch all winter. Don’t give any thought to the ways you can heat the patio with a chiminea, natural gas heater, or a simple DIY fireplace. Your pasty skin will be your reward.
\nSince you treat your mower like a tank when in use, you can do the same while it sits idle before spring. It would be a waste of time for you to inspect the tires, right? You never ran over any debris last year I’m sure.
\nPro tip: Even with tough “no-flat” type tires, you may have wheel bearings that get dirty and need greasing.
\nAnd mower belts last forever, don’t they? They must be in great shape even after chips of limbs flew around the belts with your patented wood-chipping style! And since you’re not a mower repair expert, belt replacement will eat up half of your Saturday in early spring.
\nTo make your mowing take longer and damage your grass, don’t even think of sharpening the blades after your last cut in the fall. Just do your usual… buy new blades once you see chunks of metal missing (unsafe… do not do!).
\nThose tips should make your life pretty tough when spring pops up. Maybe you learned this vicious cycle from your dad. You must think it’s a rite of passage to struggle in the springtime with mowing, lawn pests, and running to Home Depot every day.
\nIt is not!
\nJust take a look at “Mr. Yard of the Month” as you drive by this spring. He’s laying up in his hammock, sipping a cold one, and teaching his dog to fetch. He’s also found time to coach his daughter’s softball team to a 5-0 record. And I bet he walks around barefoot on that awesome lawn for the heck of it.

\nSidewalks are an indicator that the neighborhood may be a busy one. With sidewalks, houses are connected for a friendly hello when you walk down the street. Plus, if you have children, it’s safer because the cars aren’t in the same space pedestrians are in.
\nCheck out the schools nearby whether you have children or not. A school district which is rated highly by parents is a high selling point if you want to sell your home eventually. Plus, if you do have children, you want to see how close it is to you and how your children will commute.
\nParks are strong selling points when within walking distance of your new home. Do your research prior and look for must-visit outdoor spaces close to the potential new home location. Parks are where you can take walks, enjoy nature and meet new friends. Too, if you do have children, parks are a wonderful place to take them to have fun and get outside in the fresh air.
\nShopping is another item to check on your list. Do you want something close enough to walk to if you need milk? Or, how close is the nearest grocery store so you know how long it will take you to run errands? What about restaurants, if you enjoy eating out, are they close to your home or will you have to spend a lot of time driving?
\nPlus, another tip mentioned above, is to check out the neighborhood at different times. When you are checking out a place to live in the middle of the day, it might be quiet and peaceful. But, what happens when everyone comes home? Are there bars nearby that will have late night traffic? Are there train tracks, a hospital or even a fire whistle nearby? Can you imagine moving into your new home and then finding out there’s a fire whistle which goes off in the middle of the night when a fire call comes into the fire department?
\nYou also might want to take a walk around the neighborhood and talk to the neighbors in the area where you want to live. Ask how they like the community, what don’t they like about it, and where local hot spots are. If they don’t talk to you, then you probably wouldn’t want them as neighbors anyways.

\nAnother point to consider is when you walk outside, what does it smell like? Is the air clean or do you smell bad odors? You don’t want to buy a home and then find out that there’s a garbage dump nearby which you can smell when the wind is blowing south.
\nAlso, see if the streets are well-lit at night, check out the crime rate in that area. Is there bumper to bumper traffic during rush hour? What about the homes nearby, are they well-kept? Are there homes which are abandoned or vandalized within the community you’re checking? What about a lot of for sale signs or places for rent? It could be that neighborhood is heading downhill, and the neighborhood’s value is decreasing.
\nThe last thing is to picture yourself and your family, if you have one living with you, moving to this neighborhood. Do you feel comfortable and does it meet your criteria? It could be a lovely neighborhood with the perfect home, but if something feels a little off–you’ll want to trust your gut..
\nBuying a new home isn’t just about the house but living in the neighborhood that it’s in as well.
