Consistently achieving a thick verdant carpet has become the epitome of a well-cared-for property. Often times we see our front lawns as the welcome mat to our homes and businesses. A well-kept lawn and landscape signify dedication and attention to detail, traits we value in ourselves as well as others. It helps us put our best foot forward, boosting curb appeal, and giving us a sense of gratification at the well-deserved results of our hard work.
\n\n\n\n
While the desire to have a nice lawn is certainly not a bad thing, it does often come at a high price. Americans spent roughly $29.1 billion on lawn care products and services in 2015 alone. Sod, seed, hydromulch, fertilizer, herbicides and pesticides; lawn mowing, weed whacking, leaf blowing, the list of products and tasks needed for quality lawn care goes on and on.
\n\n\n\n
Traditional lawn care can be harmful to the environment
\n\n\n\n
Besides taking a large chunk out of our pocketbooks, traditional lawn care also takes a large toll on the environment. You may have guessed that given how many resources people pour onto their lawns to keep them green, they aren’t actually that “green” in practice. In order to keep lawns green, lots of water is used. Many lawn owners also use harmful pesticides and herbicides on their grass. These toxins can end up in our waterways and in our food. And lawn maintenance releases greenhouse gases, such as with the fuel needed for lawn mowers, leaf blowers, and edging.
\n\n\n\n
So, is it possible to have the best of both worlds? A green healthy lawn that is both economical and environmentally responsible?
\n\n\n\n
The answer is YES!
\n\n\n\n
Speaking specifically for lawn care, putting into place an ‘eco-friendly’ maintenance plan requires little change from traditional methods.
\n\n\n\n
The key components for an eco-friendly lawn have to do with these two things:
\n\n\n\n
Taking steps to build healthy soil biology that will naturally support a green lawn.
\n\n\n\n
‘Building healthy soil biology’ can sound like a task larger than most property owners are willing to take on. Keep in mind these simple steps and you will be well on your way to creating and maintaining healthy soil and plants. No additional science classes required!

\n\n\n\n

Spread .5” screened, organic compost on top of turf to add a boost of needed nutrients to your soil. A bacterial-based compost is good for grasses and flower beds as it increases water holding capacity and promotes healthy soil biology. Do this by top dressing .5” once per year in the early spring or late winter.

Make sure you mow your turf to the correct height. If you choose a native turf like Habiturf you may not have to mow at all, but if you do choose to cut the grass be sure to spread out mowing every 3 – 5 weeks and keep the grass 4” or taller to avoid ‘scalping’ and placing unnecessary stress on your grass (3” for non native turf species). Remember, the shorter the grass the more likely to turn brown, especially in the heat of a long Dallas summer.

Leave your grass clippings behind you after you mow. Grass clippings will decompose and add nitrogen back into the soil when you have healthy soil biology.

Be sure to use only organic, granular fertilizers such as Medina’s Growin Green which can be found at most garden centers or home improvement centers throughout Texas. Additionally, spraying on a local ‘compost tea’ gives a quick flush of growth and regreening after the winter dormancy. It also helps break down grass clippings biologically when they are not picked up. Compost Tea helps produce three stages of activity including balanced nutrient supply, structure repair through soil supplementation, and nutrient availability. As an added bonus, it is good for more than your lawn. Flowers, trees, vegetable garden, ornamentals, or pot plants will also benefit from this eco-friendly fertilizer.

\n\n\n\n
Selecting the correct turf type or planting for your specific location and site conditions.
\n\n\n\n
Now that a healthy soil profile has been developed, Dallas residents should look at using a native turf blend such as Habiturf. This blend of three native grasses, developed by the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, simulates shortgrass prairies. But don’t let that fact make you think your yard will look wild and unkempt. Habiturf provides all the visual beauty of a uniform lawn with the drought-tolerance and low maintenance of native Texas grasses. Heartiness is achieved through the use of multiple species, but the uniformity of the leaves and color make for a lush, beautiful lawn. Just be sure to plant in the proper location as it does not do well in shady areas. For more information and where to buy check out the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center or local seed suppliers such as Native American Seed for more native Texas seed and wildflower mix.

\n\n\n\n
Another issue Dallas property owners face is growing turfgrass under our beautiful shade trees. With plentiful hot summer days, the shade of large mature Live Oak is worth its weight in gold. Under these precious trees, however, little to no turf can grow due to the deep shade. This is where using a grass-like plant called ‘sedge’ becomes a game changer. Texas Sedge is a low water use native and works well in shady areas where St. Augustine, Bermuda, and Zoysia grass is difficult to grow. It produces wispy mounds of foliage that can tolerate light foot traffic and can be mowed yearly at a high setting.

\n\n\n\n
Additional steps to maintaining an Eco-Friendly Lawn
\n\n\n\n

No need to use a weed whacker! Proper use of steel or recycled plastic edger and stakes creates that clean and neat edge between areas of turf and planting bed.

For stubborn weeds use a mixture of white vinegar and orange oil as an organic herbicide.

In a large bucket mix 1 gallon 10-20% white vinegar with 2 ounces of orange oil or cleanser containing d-limonene (available at garden centers and some large retailers) and 2 ounces of liquid dishwashing detergent. Stir well to combine.

Funnel the weed killer into a plastic spray bottle. Shake it well as you use it, as the orange oil will tend to separate. Drench all surfaces of the weed with the solution during the hottest part of a sunny day. The weed will show signs of distress or die completely within two to four days. Repeat after 2 days and reapply after rain.

For year-long protection, give perennial weeds, such as dandelions, a good shot of the mixture in the spring before they have the chance to set seeds. Pick seed heads off and destroy them as they appear throughout the growing season. Don’t add them to your compost heap. Spray perennials with the herbicide in the fall to fully utilize the weed’s life cycle and send the material to the stems and roots to aid in killing the plants.

Tightly stored in a glass jar, this weed killing mixture will last indefinitely.

\n\n\n\n
With some thought and planning, a green lawn really can equal a green choice for the environment!
\n\n\n\n
Looking for more lawn care tips? Home should be safe for your animals and free from potential threats, so pet-proofing your Austin, TX landscape is a must-do task. Your pets can’t protect themselves; you have to do it for them!

\n\n\n\n
Pets, most often dogs, like to go outside for playtime or to lay in the sun. Your landscaping practices may pose several threats to your pets as they try to enjoy their time. Things such as fertilizers, pesticides, mulch, and compost could be toxic if your animal tries to eat or lick it. Which is highly likely if you have a puppy because puppies are adventurous and will get into anything!

\n\n\n\n
So, if you need to pet-proof your Austin, TX landscape, here are some tips!
\n\n\n\n
Pick Dog-Safe Flowers and Plants
\n\n\n\n
You might spend hours on your seasonal flower bed only for your dog to dig it up and eat the flowers. These things happen! Many common flowers can be poisonous to dogs. If you’re unsure, call your vet to confirm that your flower selections are dog safe.

\n\n\n\n
A few common backyard flowers that are dangerous for dogs include:
\n\n\n\n

Tulips

Daffodils

Azaleas

Amaryllis

\n\n\n\n
Pet owners have to worry about more than just flowers. Hundreds of common houseplants and garden plants are toxic for your animal. Here are the 10 most common toxic plants in Austin, TX.
\n\n\n\n

Mountain Laurel

Ivy

Poinsettia

Oleander

Mushrooms

Onions and Garlic

Lilles

Grape Plants

Sago Palm

Pokeweed

\n\n\n\n
Fence Around Your Swimming Pool or Ponds
\n\n\n\n
If you have a swimming pool or a pond as part of your landscape, you need to take some extra precautions. Yes, dogs can typically swim, but falling into a pond or a pool can be deadly for your pet.

\n\n\n\n
Pet owners should teach their pets how to get out of their pools from the time they’re little in case they ever fall in accidentally. It could save their lives!
\n\n\n\n
Make Sure to Secure Trash Cans
\n\n\n\n
Do you have your trash can sitting on the side of your house awaiting trash pick-up day? Most of us do, but that can be hazardous to your dog. Make sure the trash cans are secured with appropriately fitting and locking lids.

\n\n\n\n
Dogs are curious, and the smell of old food is appealing. He will happily take a bite of that old burger without realizing its soaked in old cleaning supplies.
\n\n\n\n
Avoid Using Chemicals Near Your Pets
\n\n\n\n
Insecticides, pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers may perform an important job for you, but they can be toxic for your pet. If you do decide to use them, keep your pet away from the lawn when it’s recently been treated. Dogs and cats should never walk on freshly sprayed lawns. Put your animal in another area for a few days.

\n\n\n\n
Ideally, you wouldn’t treat the areas that your pet will spend his time. That prevents your pets from accidentally ingesting any of the chemicals. Dogs do sometimes decide to eat grass.

\n\n\n\n
Most importantly, be sure all of these chemicals are locked up out of your pet’s reach. Put them in your shed or garage. A dog would happily take a drink of some chemicals spilled all over the floor.
\n\n\n\n
Check Fences for Loose Spots
\n\n\n\n
If your yard is fenced, that’s a huge bonus! Fences keep your pets safe and prevent them from running away. Puppies and dogs need plenty of exercise. A dog or little puppy can easily find a small gap or hole in your fence that you may not notice. So, it’s important for you to regularly check your fence to make sure it’s secure for your animals.
\n\n\n\n
Mow Your Lawn Regularly
\n\n\n\n
Tall grass can be a haven for ticks and snakes to hide. While most snakes aren’t venomous, a few poisonous snakes do call Austin, TX home like the Western diamondback rattlesnake.

\n\n\n\n
Make sure you mow your grass regularly and remove any branches that are laying around. Clear out debris often. Ticks can be harmful to your dogs! Plus, fleas love tall grass. Unlike other parts of the nation, Austin doesn’t have a specific flea season. Austin doesn’t have multiple days of below-freezing temperatures or extended dry conditions, so fleas can survive year-round. That means you need to pay attention to your pets to be sure they’re flea-free and cut your grass regularly.
\n\n\n\n
Set Up Barriers
\n\n\n\n
It would be nice if Fido understood walking in your new garden bed is a bad idea, but they have no concept of that. Owners have the responsibility of deciding what areas are off-limits by creating physical reminders.

\n\n\n\n
You can do this by making walls, fences, or pieces of wood to create a makeshift fence around the areas you want your pet to stay away from. Another idea is planting tall, native grasses or bushes. Make sure the plants that you pick aren’t poisonous.
\n\n\n\n
Designate the Bathroom Area for Your Dog
\n\n\n\n
Grass will turn brown and die in the area that your dog uses the bathroom. Rather than having random spots throughout your entire lawn, pick a spot where you want your dog to do his business.
\n\n\n\n
Keep the grass in that area well watered and longer than the other parts of your yard because it helps dilute the urine and hide the brown spots. Some smart pet owners create a bathroom area hidden behind a fence or a wall so guests don’t notice.

\n\n\n\n
You could also hardscape the area where your dog does his business. Hardscaping would make it easier for you to scoop up feces and spray urine away with a hose!
\n\n\n\n
Keep Your Animals Safe by Pet-Proofing
\n\n\n\n
Pet owners have the responsibility of keeping their animals safe and sound in their environments. Dogs and some cats are adventurous outside, so you have to pay special attention to how you’ll handle your landscape and yard.

\n\n\n\n
The most important thing is to avoid anything that could be toxic to your animal. That means be sure that your flowers and plants aren’t toxic to animals. If you aren’t sure, talk to your vet. Keep all of the chemicals out of their reach, stored inside a shed or garage ideally.

\n\n\n\n
Last, always watch for dangers. That could be a loose fence board or a pond that you think is beautiful. Landscaping and pets can mix harmoniously with a little planning on your end.
\n\n\n\n
Looking for more lawn care tips? Each option has positives and negatives, so you have to look at your unique situation! Orlando, FL residents need to consider the pros and cons of DIY lawn care to make the right choice.

\n\n\n\n
Residents in Orlando, FL have a long growing season for their lawn when compared to other regions of the country. The higher temperatures and climate mean you do more lawn care than other homeowners, which makes Orlando unique. You need to closely consider the pros and cons of DIY lawn care vs. professional lawn care.
\n\n\n\n
The PROS of DIY Lawn Care
\n\n\n\n
Saving Money
\n\n\n\n
The biggest pro for DIY lawn care is that it does TYPICALLY (not always) save you money. If you’re pinching pennies and making them scream, professional lawn care may not be in the budget for you.

\n\n\n\n
One of the biggest areas you’ll save money is the cost of lawn mowing. If you have ¼ of an acre in Orlando, FL, the average cost to have your grass cut is $48.77. That doesn’t sound too bad, but during some periods of the year, you may have to cut your grass twice a week.

\n\n\n\n
For our example, we’ll say it’s cut once a week. That’s $195.08 per month. You could spend over $2,340 per year on lawn mowing! A riding lawn mower costs anywhere between $500 and $2,000 depending on the make and model, and they last for years. You do need to pay for gas, but mowing your own grass does save you money.

\n\n\n\n
Another example is the cost of overseeding your lawn. The cost can be anywhere from $500 to $1,000. Grass seed doesn’t cost that much; it’s the cost of the labor involved with overseeding. Overseeding will take you several hours to an entire day to finish yourself, but the savings there are large.
\n\n\n\n
Exercise
\n\n\n\n
Who needs the gym? Taking care of your lawn is exercise enough, especially when the temperatures are high and you sweat a gallon or more. It’s a great way to get some exercise in or get some time alone with your headphones. No screaming kids in your ear is a bonus.
\n\n\n\n
You Get the Credit
\n\n\n\n
A lot of homeowners take serious pride in their lawn care and landscaping. You spend all of that time taking care of your lawn. It feels great to get the credit for how wonderful it looks! Taking care of your lawn yourself means that you can put your own creative spin on your design and how you want it to look.
\n\n\n\n
The CONS of DIY Lawn Care
\n\n\n\n
The Results May Be Lacking
\n\n\n\n
You aren’t a professional, and the results you wanted may not be achievable without their help. It takes time and practice to get it right.

\n\n\n\n
The problem isn’t just not getting the results you wanted, but you might spend too much money trying to get the right results. Professionals can knock out weeds easier than homeowners can. You’ll spend weeks trying to find the right combination of chemicals and products when a professional would get it right the first time. They do this on a regular basis.

\n\n\n\n
For example, core aeration is one task that can really make your lawn shine, but it can cost around $100 for a professional to aerate a 5,000 square foot lawn. It costs around $80 to rent a core aerator for the day, but it may take you more than one day to complete the task. If your results aren’t satisfactory, you may have to do it over again. In these cases, hiring a professional who can complete the task timely and properly the first time around is a wise investment of your money.
\n\n\n\n
Time is Money Too
\n\n\n\n
Let’s not forget that time is money as well. Do you want to invest a lot of your time taking care of your lawn? For some people, lawn care is a true joy, so taking the time for DIY lawn care is no problem for them.

\n\n\n\n
You have to consider your schedule and flexibility. Do you have the time to spend on DIY lawn care? If so, that’s great, but you may find you have to give up something else to make the time.
\n\n\n\n
Hidden Costs You Won’t Expect
\n\n\n\n
You’ll save money in some aspects of lawn care, but there will be hidden costs you don’t expect. Things can easily go wrong without a professional over-seeing your lawn care.

\n\n\n\n
You might not notice patches of your grass starting to come up because of a grub infestation. The crabgrass weed may rapidly take over your lawn without you realizing it began! If you encounter a lawn disease or something that you don’t know how to fix, you’ll spend money fixing it and you might end up still having to call a professional.

\n\n\n\n
The average cost of weed control in Orlando, FL is $60. If you have to experiment and purchase a few brands of weed killer, you’ll spend more than that! An average gallon of weed killer is around $20!

\n\n\n\n
Don’t forget that you need to fertilize our lawn at least once or twice a year. The average cost of lawn fertilizing in Orlando, FL is $60 for ¼ of an acre. If you do that yourself, you will spend several hours and just a bit less in fertilizer. Homeowners forget to include the cost of things when they consider how much they’ll save by using DIY lawn care.
\n\n\n\n
Deciding Which is Right for You
\n\n\n\n
If you love taking care of your lawn or if you don’t have any room in the budget, DIY lawn care could be right for you. In most circumstances, a professional lawn care service has many benefits. You benefit from their expertise, and they come well-equipped to handle anything that they might encounter. Plus, you’re reclaiming hours of your life that you can spend with your family or having fun!

\n","title":"The Pros & Cons of DIY Lawn Care in Orlando, FL","featured_media":{"localFile":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"aspectRatio":1.3333333333333333,"src":"/static/6c814f08b65744f77dc982cff766e51e/f2cbb/orlando-lawn-care.jpg","srcSet":"/static/6c814f08b65744f77dc982cff766e51e/107df/orlando-lawn-care.jpg 320w,\n/static/6c814f08b65744f77dc982cff766e51e/293e9/orlando-lawn-care.jpg 500w,\n/static/6c814f08b65744f77dc982cff766e51e/f2cbb/orlando-lawn-care.jpg 800w","srcWebp":"/static/6c814f08b65744f77dc982cff766e51e/98a65/orlando-lawn-care.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/6c814f08b65744f77dc982cff766e51e/67b76/orlando-lawn-care.webp 320w,\n/static/6c814f08b65744f77dc982cff766e51e/8df11/orlando-lawn-care.webp 500w,\n/static/6c814f08b65744f77dc982cff766e51e/98a65/orlando-lawn-care.webp 800w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}},"yoast_meta":{"yoast_wpseo_title":"The Pros & Cons of DIY Lawn Care in Orlando, FL | Wikilawn","yoast_wpseo_metadesc":""}}},{"node":{"id":"413634eb-f1f0-5de9-aa05-007f04834fee","slug":"xeriscaping","path":"/lawn-care/tx/austin/xeriscaping/","status":"publish","template":"","format":"standard","author":{"description":"","name":"Wikilawn","id":"706a455e-0b9c-56ea-aeed-4f411c6c1973","path":"/author/wikilawn/","avatar_urls":{"wordpress_96":"https://secure.gravatar.com/avatar/fd0301960c52ded452e0b5fc145cb264?s=96&d=mm&r=g"}},"categories":[{"id":"c823f674-c750-5882-9059-d8c27fbe7e1d","name":"Austin","count":19,"path":"/category/lawn-care/tx/austin/"}],"date":"December 25th, 2018","excerpt":"
Xeriscaping–the name conjures up space-age like images and futuristic landscaping techniques. While the term has gained massive popularity in the last few years, the idea is not a new one. It has been around since 1978. Coined by the Denver Water Department, this landscaping technique refers to landscaping in a way that addresses our limited water resources.
\n\n\n\n
Xeriscaping is most common in desert climates as a substitute for a grass lawn. While Austin, TX isn’t actually desert climate, the extreme heat, watering restrictions and and periodic droughts make xeriscaping a common and viable option. Additionally, with Austin being the weird, slightly liberal hippie town, environmentally friendly choice is just the right thing to do for many.
\n\n\n\n
We all know that lawn mowing in Austin, TX – especially in the summer – can be brutal. Xeriscaping is a great way to create a natural, gorgeous appearance for your Austin, TX lawn without having to invest in expensive, wasteful irrigation equipment or spend hours tending to your landscape. There are plenty of cacti, succulents and other plants native to the Austin area that make for a beautiful lawn without the hassle of grass.
\n\n\n\n
Here are a few tips if you decide to xeriscape your Austin, TX lawn.
\n\n\n\n
1. Plan carefully
\n\n\n\n
Start your xeriscaping project by drawing out a detailed map of your yard. Measure and label the distance between buildings, trees, or other permanent structures. Then, make a sun chart, detailing where the sun hits the yard at different times of the day. Note any shaded areas in particular. Think about your area’s climate, and determine your area’s annual rainfall. You will need to select plants that can withstand the water levels provided naturally in your area.

\n\n\n\n
2. Add some layers
\n\n\n\n
Once you have figured out your climate and conditions, obtain a list of plants that will be appropriate for your region. Focus on native plants, and then figure out how you want to layer your garden. Each layer should surround a focal point, allowing for excellent visibility and water retention, like a tree.

\n\n\n\n
3. Select your plants wisely
\n\n\n\n
The whole point of xeriscaping is to prioritize native growth. If you have any existing native plants, incorporate them in your design. Think about woodlands and open spaces, and study how these areas interact with plants. Avoid invasive exotics–while these plants may be beautiful, they can damage the natural biodiversity of your surrounding community.

\n\n\n\n
The best type of plants will depend on where you live. Plants native to your location are best choice but you can also use universally drought-tolerant plants. Keep in mind that you will need to tend carefully to your plants until they become established, observing to make sure they receive enough water.
\n\n\n\n
For more info on what plants to use, visit the City of Austin’s guide to native and adapted landscape plants.

\n\n\n\n
4. Don’t forget the grass
\n\n\n\n
Converting your lawn to a xeriscape doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to forego grass altogether. Instead, you need to reduce the amount of grass in your yard to only what you need. Bermudagrass is by far the most common grass here in Austin, but you could also choose buffalo grass or zoysia grass, which are both very water conservative and each have their own look.

\n\n\n\n
If you have areas that are steeply sloped or shaded, consider planting a groundcover plant that will be more shade-tolerant. You can also replace a steep slope or areas between sidewalks with drought-hardy plants or low-water usage perennials.

\n\n\n\n
5. Irrigate intelligently
\n\n\n\n
While a xeriscaped lawn will drastically reduce your water consumption, you still will need to provide some irrigation system to keep your plants healthy–they do need some water, after all. Drip irrigation is the most effective way to do this. It can reduce water consumption by up to sixty percent, minimizing the amount of water lost from runoff, evaporation, or wind.

\n\n\n\n
You can also implement techniques to retain water. Consider digging a pond or creating a similar irrigation catchment. Using a rainwater barrel will help you make the best possible use of natural rainfall.

\n\n\n\n
6. Understand and care for the soil
\n\n\n\n
Take a soil sample and have it analyzed. Your local agricultural government office or cooperative extension can analyze your soil for you if you send in a sample. You can also use an at-home soil testing kit; soil tests are often very low in cost. Once you know your soil’s type and pH, you can plan accordingly.

\n\n\n\n
If your soil is mostly clay or sand, you will need to amend it so that it can better retain moisture. Depending on the native plants you intend to grow, you may need to adjust the pH or consistency. You can do this by adding compost or other organic matter.

\n\n\n\n
7. Remember to mulch
\n\n\n\n
Mulch is an easy way to minimize evaporation, control erosion, and reduce weed growth. Either organic mulches, like wood chips, or inorganic mulches, like stones, can be used, but try to avoid materials like plastic. Mulch should be three to four inches deep.

\n\n\n\n
Gardens that are intensely green require much water to maintain. If you live in a dry climate, xeriscaping might be the right choice for you. You will spend less money on plants that will inevitably die, and you will spend less time pampering non-native plants. With xeriscape gardening, you can enjoy your garden more, without having to worry about whether your fragile plants will survive the hot, dry summers.

\n","title":"Xeriscaping in Austin, TX: A Beginner’s Guide","featured_media":{"localFile":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"aspectRatio":1.5901060070671378,"src":"/static/6c2962432e440129130bfdf1a0c48792/5d440/xeriscaped-lawn-austin-tx.jpg","srcSet":"/static/6c2962432e440129130bfdf1a0c48792/107df/xeriscaped-lawn-austin-tx.jpg 320w,\n/static/6c2962432e440129130bfdf1a0c48792/293e9/xeriscaped-lawn-austin-tx.jpg 500w,\n/static/6c2962432e440129130bfdf1a0c48792/f2cbb/xeriscaped-lawn-austin-tx.jpg 800w,\n/static/6c2962432e440129130bfdf1a0c48792/5d440/xeriscaped-lawn-austin-tx.jpg 900w","srcWebp":"/static/6c2962432e440129130bfdf1a0c48792/e342a/xeriscaped-lawn-austin-tx.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/6c2962432e440129130bfdf1a0c48792/67b76/xeriscaped-lawn-austin-tx.webp 320w,\n/static/6c2962432e440129130bfdf1a0c48792/8df11/xeriscaped-lawn-austin-tx.webp 500w,\n/static/6c2962432e440129130bfdf1a0c48792/98a65/xeriscaped-lawn-austin-tx.webp 800w,\n/static/6c2962432e440129130bfdf1a0c48792/e342a/xeriscaped-lawn-austin-tx.webp 900w","sizes":"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px"}}}},"yoast_meta":{"yoast_wpseo_title":"Xeriscaping in Austin, TX: A Beginner's Guide | Wikilawn","yoast_wpseo_metadesc":""}}},{"node":{"id":"9b9b0600-f6ca-5c89-a8dc-d9bd8647a75c","slug":"bringing-plants-indoors-washington-dc-winter","path":"/lawn-care/washington-dc/bringing-plants-indoors-washington-dc-winter/","status":"publish","template":"","format":"standard","author":{"description":"","name":"Wikilawn","id":"706a455e-0b9c-56ea-aeed-4f411c6c1973","path":"/author/wikilawn/","avatar_urls":{"wordpress_96":"https://secure.gravatar.com/avatar/fd0301960c52ded452e0b5fc145cb264?s=96&d=mm&r=g"}},"categories":[{"id":"30ecf80b-c320-5679-942e-29dcd7b95c66","name":"Washington DC","count":8,"path":"/category/lawn-care/washington-dc/"}],"date":"December 12th, 2018","excerpt":"
Whether us Washingtonians want it to or not, winter comes, bringing frosty temperatures and a slow death to many beloved outdoor plants and grasses. Though you may be grateful to store the lawnmower for the season, watching your favorite rose bush or hydrangea wither is depressing.

\n\n\n\n
Most gardeners understand that frost death is natural for some outdoor plants, but indoor plants are a different story. During the summer, garden enthusiasts bring warm-weather potted varieties outside to enjoy the sun on a deck or porch. As autumn approaches, houseplants need to be brought back indoors to survive.

\n\n\n\n
However, failing to follow the proper steps when bringing plants inside can actually hurt your blooms’ health. A rapid transition and improper care can kill your plants almost as quickly as sub-zero temperatures.

\n\n\n\n
Use this step-by-step guide to properly acclimate your plants to their indoor environment. With a little effort, you can protect your favorite greenery through the chillier months and have a green head start next spring!
\n\n\n\n
Before Bringing Plants Indoors
\n\n\n\n
1 – Prep the Plants
\n\n\n\n
Take time to prune and purge your inventory before moving your potted plants indoors. The first frost in the Washington DC area can be as early as October 21st, and will most certainly happen by November 8. So monitor the weather and plan accordingly.
\n\n\n\n
If a plant was struggling to survive in the summer, it will likely do even worse indoors. Cut your losses and compost plants that aren’t healthy.

\n\n\n\n
Furthermore, don’t bring in plants with pests or disease since these problems can spread quickly to other growths in an indoor environment. The DC area is particularly prone to lawn and plant disease due to our hot, humid summers. You may be able to treat infested leaves with neem oil, but to be safe, consider leaving infected plants outdoors. Finally, prune back overgrowth or wilted leaves before bringing plants inside to ensure optimum health for the big move.
\n\n\n\n
2 – Choose Wisely
\n\n\n\n
Obviously, houseplants should come back inside for the winter, but some outdoor plants can be brought in as well. Some species, like geraniums, begonias, and fuchsia do fairly well in an indoor environment. Even vegetables like tomatoes and peppers can produce fruit all winter in the right circumstances.

\n\n\n\n
When choosing which plants to rehome, remember that not all species are meant to come inside. More tender perennials prefer to lie dormant in a mild winter, like lavender and rosemary. Do plant-specific research before deciding to move outdoor plants indoors.

\n\n\n\n
During the Move
\n\n\n\n
1 – Transition Gradually
\n\n\n\n
Though it may be tempting to spend a single afternoon moving plants from your porch or garden to an indoor space, resist the urge to make a quick transition. Instead, let plants adapt gradually and naturally.

\n\n\n\n
Once the outdoor temperature reaches 50 degrees – typically mid-October in the mid-Atlantic regions – or colder at night, start bringing potted houseplants in the house after dark. Most houseplants will die in temperatures below 45 degrees, so this strategy will protect them from wilting and leaf loss. Bring these plants back outside in the morning, and spend about a week switching the plants twice a day. Gradually increase the amount of time plants spend indoors so that they can adapt to the warmer, dryer, and less sunny indoor environment before living inside full-time.

\n\n\n\n
2 – Choose A Good Location
\n\n\n\n
Different plants have different needs, but all species still need some amount of sunshine to survive. Even shade-loving plants still need ambient sunlight. Ideally, plants should be kept near an uncovered, south-facing window. You can rotate the plants every now and then to make sure each is receiving enough light.

\n\n\n\n
However, mind the air temperature near the window panes; poorly insulated sills let in deadly drafts that might damage your blooms. Sometimes, radiators and heaters are located near windows, which can also overheat or dry out your plants. During the first few weeks, check the plants’ environment every day to make sure that the location is not harming your greenery.

\n\n\n\n
Once Plants Are Inside
\n\n\n\n
1 – Adjust Your Caretaking Routine
\n\n\n\n
Plants have different needs in a sheltered environment, and you’ll have to adapt your caretaking schedule accordingly. Outside, sunlight causes water to evaporate more quickly, so plants need frequent and thorough waterings. Indoors, there’s less sun, and plants grow more slowly, so you’ll need to water them less often. As a general rule of thumb, only water plants when the top two or three inches of soil becomes dry. Since indoor environments tend to be less humid, try spritzing leaves with water twice a day to prevent the tips of the leaves from drying out.

\n\n\n\n
2 – Prepare for the Spring
\n\n\n\n
Once outdoor temperatures remain over 60 degrees Fahrenheit day and night, you can begin transitioning plants back to an outdoor environment. Remember to slowly increase time spent outdoors to avoid shocking the plant and damaging its health.
\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n
Conclusion
\n\n\n\n
With so many steps involved, bringing plants inside can seem like a lot of work. However, this late-autumn chore can actually benefit your health! Studies have found that common indoor-outdoor plants like rosemary, sage, garlic, and parsley can boost your immune system and help you fight the flu when used in teas, steams, and more. Studies find that indoor plants improve mood, reduce stress, and even improve indoor air quality.

\n\n\n\n
Help your own health and your plant’s health, and bring your garden indoors! Follow the steps above to ensure your plants survive and thrive in your home this winter. After all, science shows that plants make good company.
\n\n\n\n
Washington DC residents – what tips do you have for bringing plants indoors? Sound off in the comments below.
\n","title":"A Guide To Bringing Plants Indoors for the Washington DC Winter","featured_media":null,"yoast_meta":{"yoast_wpseo_title":"A Guide To Bringing Plants Indoors for the Washington DC Winter | Wikilawn","yoast_wpseo_metadesc":""}}},{"node":{"id":"8fe5ce68-cd86-5230-a2be-dd3bdb2f3a73","slug":"5-fall-landscaping-tips-to-maintain-your-curb-appeal","path":"/lawn-care/5-fall-landscaping-tips-to-maintain-your-curb-appeal/","status":"publish","template":"","format":"standard","author":{"description":"","name":"Wikilawn","id":"706a455e-0b9c-56ea-aeed-4f411c6c1973","path":"/author/wikilawn/","avatar_urls":{"wordpress_96":"https://secure.gravatar.com/avatar/fd0301960c52ded452e0b5fc145cb264?s=96&d=mm&r=g"}},"categories":[{"id":"205f24d4-c1e5-5728-bb28-8ba70eecbc7a","name":"Lawn Care","count":432,"path":"/category/lawn-care/"}],"date":"October 22nd, 2018","excerpt":"
Fall is a lovely time of year, but in many parts of the country, it’s rather short. When you get rid of your dead landscaping during autumn, you won’t have to look at them during the winter months. Remove dead annuals and perennials. Prune (lightly) the dying branches from trees and shrubs.
\n
Wrap your Shrubs in Burlap Sweaters
\n
Your shrubs can be damaged from high winds, ice, and heavy snow. You’ll want to keep your grass around 3 inches tall year-round to make sure it’s able to grow properly and receive enough sunlight.
\n
Learn How to Grow Grass like a gardening expert.
\n
Give your Walkway Some TLC
\n
It’s essential to take care of your plants and lawn before winter hits, but it’s important to give your walkways and driveway some special attention, too.
