\n","content":"\nIt seems that each year more and more research is published highlighting the importance of and real benefits achieved by exposing ourselves to increased time spent in nature. Physical and psychological benefits can be achieved simply by viewing nature! For most city-dwelling Austinites, an escape from the urban landscape only happens if we plan a long weekend getaway into the Texas Hill Country, Travis Lake, or take a trip to the East Texas Piney Woods. While these are some of our favorite outdoor spots, if we do not carve out the time dedicated to spending in nature, we can often go months without being truly immersed in a natural landscape. A great way to have the health benefits of the outdoors year-round is by dedicating a little shelf or hanging space in your home or apartment to the growing of interior houseplants.
\n\n\n\nHere are a few of our favorite, no fail, green thumb to black thumb houseplants that will do more than spruce up the esthetic of the interior of your home but also provide you with cleaner air, a more relaxed environment and a picture-perfect interior esthetic.
\n\n\n\nPick the perfect spot. Before you get too excited about buying your plants, do a bit of research on the specific plants you’ve been eying at the garden center. Find out all you can about them and their optimal growth habits. Do they like 8 hours of full sun in a window sill or would they be happier in a shady corner or humid bathroom? Do they mind the warm breeze of a late summer afternoon, or would they rather make their home in the still corner away from all vents and open windows? Remember, lots of popular indoor plant varieties come from tropical/semi-tropical or very dry and arid climates. Try to find a place for them in your own space that will make them feel right at home.
\n\n\n\nRoom to grow. Just as you must do some quick research on the specific conditions your new indoor plant will require, you’ll also need to plan ahead when carving out a special space for your verdant new housemate. Some indoor plants will start out small both above and below the soil. Make sure you know the general growing habits of each plant – some like to trail and spread out while others like to grow upright and tall. Likewise, many species of popular indoor plants like to have their roots a little more bound than most.

\n\n\n\nIs there a corner of your home where nothing seems to fit? Try the Chinese evergreen to cover that unused space and soften the room. These large houseplants can grow up to three feet in height, with large, oval leaves that are a beautiful camouflage for bare spots in your home. Their leaves can come in a variety of shades of green, dark to light and even a variegated variety.

These are plants that love the sun as much as any Austinite! This plant grows fast and will need to be repotted often. If you have a space with lots of sun (who doesn’t in Austin?) and want to be highly involved with watering, repotting, trimming and other maintenance, then this whimsical plant is the one for you.

Also known as a split leaf philodendron, this gorgeous plant is one of the trendiest indoor plants of all with its iconic leaves making an appearance on art prints, upholstery, stationary and everything in between. Part of the Monstera’s popularity comes from the uniquely tropical vibe it lends any spaces it inhabits. Monstera plant is native to the Central American rainforest, therefore, it needs a warm climate, lots of sunlight, and plenty of water. With optional growing conditions, this plant can grow up to 30 feet high and needs frequent pruning or propagating so only bring it into your home if you have plenty of space and lots of direct light. It’s safe to say this plant isn’t going away anytime soon.

This popular indoor plant can be found listed under many names, one of which being Devil’s Ivy because it will grow in many harsh conditions. A perfect place for your new Golden Pothos is a corner that could use some new interest. Find a hanger to attach to your plant’s pot or place situated on a high shelf, Golden Pothos is a wonderful plant for low-light areas. As it is a vine, the plant will grow long and cascade down, offering a beautiful addition to any area of the home. You can prune back the vines as needed if they become too long.

One of the most forgiving plants when it comes to care, it will survive with little attention, just be sure to not overwater your new Snake Plant because the roots will rot easily. These plants are a great way to fill your Austin home with life and vitality, even those areas that are hidden from bright outdoor light.

It is wise to choose plants based on their tolerance to the hot, humid climate and that can grow and thrive without the need for excessive amounts of water and fertilizers. Picking plants that are generally self-sufficient given the naturally copious amounts of bright sunlight and fresh rainwater will be better for you, your landscape, and the environment.
\n\n\n\nThe following 5 landscape plants were chosen as ‘Perfect for Orlando’ because they are either native to the Central Florida region, or they are easily established and noninvasive in the Orlando landscape, and are easy to care for in residential and commercial settings.

This member of the palm family is slow-growing yet a very long-lived plant (some have been found to be 500-700 years old!) and is an iconic Floridian choice for any area in your yard you want to make feel breezy and tropical. Its clumping form helps make a few plants look like a full, dense planting. It likes to grow under trees with some sunlight. The color of its palm-like leaves can vary from yellow-green, green, dark green and silvery green when grown near the coast. The Saw Palmetto’s flowers are a perfect food source for sought after pollinators and provide habitat for desirable pollinators such as native bees and moths.

This shrub is a rarity in Florida in that it’s deciduous, meaning it loses its leaves in winter.

Though this shrub is a Florida native plant (and grows naturally throughout the southern United States), it’s not always on hand at garden centers so be sure to ask your favorite garden supplier to order you what you will need.
\n\n\n\nBeautyberry attracts birds and butterflies and has a casual rambling look that works well in as a backdrop to home foundations or along walls. Just be sure to give it lots of space to grow as it could crowd its plant neighbors. Since it takes almost any kind of light, this is one plant that can be used in light shade areas that receive mainly dappled sun (though deer may be more tempted to munch on it there).

The beautiful deep burgundy foliage of the Auntie Lou Cordyline (Cordyline
Cordyline, also called Ti Plants, don’t like to stay wet, so give them regular irrigation with time to dry out a bit between watering. Partial sun to shade is best. They can grow to 3’ to 6’ tall and 2’ to 3’ wide, the perfect choice when selecting a plant to stand as a backdrop in a mixed planting bed.

Crotons are possibly the most popular of Orlando’s colorful foliage plants, with brilliantly-colored leaves streaked with gold, red, orange, green and even pink. They are easy to care for shrubs that provide an instant infusion of color and low-maintenance needs for any size yard. They feature varieties with many leaf types and sizes from swirly, narrow ribbons to wide, flat leaves. Some have fun names like Dreadlocks, Curly Boy, or Sloppy Painter.
\n\n\n\nNo matter which you choose, consider planting different varieties together for a riot of color and a mix of textures, or place several of the same variety to grow together in a “drift.” These gorgeous shrubs can jazz up an all-green landscape or work well with flowering shrubs or other plants prized for their bright foliage like the Cordyline ‘Red Sister’ variety. A benefit of mixing crotons with flowering shrubs is the consistency of color in the landscape, even while other plants are not in bloom.

When you think of typical Florida palm trees, an image of tall tree trunks stretching toward the sky often comes to mind. However, the robellini palm (Phoenix roebelenii) offers a miniature palm choice growing to a maximum of 12 feet. When selecting your specific tree, look for plants with 3 trunks (or ask your garden supplier for this specifically) as the odd number grouping provides a more aesthetic appearance. Although robellini palms enjoy the sun, they do prefer some shade during the hotter afternoon hours. If your palm will be planted in a container or pot, move the plant to an east-facing area that is sheltered from the sun’s rays for part of the day. Keep in mind the proximity of your new robellini palm to sidewalks and entryways. The tips of the fronds are often very pokey and can cause painful pricks if one gets too close.
\n\n\n\nTaking the time to research which plants are best for the natural conditions in Orlando will help save you time and money when it comes to landscape longevity and the amount of maintenance you must perform over the lifetime of the garden. One of the most beautiful and awe-inspiring places in Phoenix is within the Phoenix Art Museum. Step inside one of the infinity rooms by Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama and experience an expansive feeling in just 25 square feet of space. The art installation entitled You Who are Getting Obliterated in the Dancing Swarm of Fireflies features mirrored walls and black granite as well as 250 LED lights that dangle at different heights throughout the room. The lasting effect on visitors is supposed to make you feel like you are floating in space and many have come back to the museum just for a chance to experience the room again. Although no flashes are allowed in the museum, many patrons do take pictures within the space thanks to the light in the room.

This giant 11-foot bass was invented in 1850 by Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume and is twice the height of a double bass. The octobass makes sounds so low that they aren’t even audible to the human ear. This magnificent classical instrument is a rare and incredibly hard to play. The octobass is located within the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix and is quite the sight to see. Get an Insta-Worthy pic next to the octobass to get a feel for its immense size that will delight all of your band loving followers.

This odd home was built in the 1920s and includes over 5,000 square feet of living space. The Tovrea Castle sits in the middle of Phoenix with 44 acres of preserved desert surrounding the home. It has had three families live within its walls since it was built and was recently opened up for tours to the public. The Tovrea Castle is said to look like a wedding cake and offers many interesting architectural features. The tours for the home sell out well in advance making this a hot spot for those who want to get a glimpse inside its walls. If you can’t get tickets, consider stopping by to snap a picture of the outside of this unique and popular Phoenix landmark.

There are plenty of companies that offer hot air balloon rides in the Phoenix area. Certainly, this list of gardening bloggers met and beyond exceeded Gladwell’s Rule. They are leading experts in their fields, or more accurately, their garden beds.
It wasn’t easy, but we scoured the internet to find the 50 best gardening blogs of 2018 to continue reading in 2019.
