An emerald-green, thick lawn makes your property stand out and — admit it — makes you proud. When your grass gets sick, you treat it. Sometimes with chemicals. If you have pets, those chemicals can be dangerous. Dogs don’t just walk in your lawn. They roll in it, eat plants and blades of grass, and put their muzzles in it, sniffing around. When they lick themselves, chemicals on the lawn go straight into their system. So anything that’s on your grass gets on, and in, your dog (cats, too). Some of the most common lawn treatments are some of the most dangerous for pets.
\n\n\n\n
Dangerous Lawn Chemicals
\n\n\n
\n

Credit: Centers for Disease Control

\n\n\n
\n
Disulfoton – a toxic pesticide used to treat rose bushes. It can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and seizures, even death.
\n\n\n\n
Metaldehyde – used in slug and snail bait. Metaldehyde can cause seizures, tremors, and even kill your pet.
\n\n\n\n
Cocoa mulch – made from the hulls of the cocoa bean. Like chocolate, this type of mulch contains theobromine, a chemical toxic to pets. Cocoa mulch causes drooling, a rapid heart rate, tremors, and dark red gums.
\n\n\n\n
Organic fertilizer – Most organic lawn fertilizers include bone meal, fish meal, and other tasty items that attract pets. Even these “natural” fertilizers can cause vomiting, obstructions, and pancreatitis.
\n
\n\n\n\n
Some of these chemicals lawn care companies use are mixed with bone meal and blood, so dogs and cats love the taste. Metaldehyde comes in pellet form and looks like dog food. It’s also flavored with molasses to attract snails. Unfortunately, it also attracts your dog.
\n\n\n\n
Organophosphates are organic compounds found in insecticides. They can harm an animal’s brain and nervous system, and cause gastrointestinal irritation. Dogs are exposed when they eat a plant that’s been treated or inhale the chemicals. Warning signs include paralysis, weakness, trouble breathing, and excessive salivation.
\n\n\n\n
How to Handle It
\n\n\n\n
Avoiding these items is best, but that’s not always possible. Your average goats will eat everything but grass before they even glance down at the turf beneath their hooves. Goats eat poison ivy, poison oak, brambles, and invasive kudzu with gusto. They’ll pull branches from trees and take down saplings through a combination of trampling and devouring. Think of them as a string trimmer with no boundaries, which makes them extremely effective at brush control. When you hear about Google renting goats to mow its Mountain View, Calif., campus, it’s a little misleading. The goats are not creating a manicured lawn, but are rather being used for their abilities to clear brush efficiently.
\n\n\n\n
In addition to not being selective, goats are also not very savvy about what they shouldn’t eat. They’ll destroy your ornamental flower beds and strip the bark off trees, killing them. But they will also eat poisonous plants, which can mean killing themselves. Tammy Dunakin of Rent-a-Ruminant in Seattle laments that goats “won’t eat tin cans or other litter. Only paper and vegetation,” she says, adding that the herd works on their own time: “goat time.”
\n\n\n\n
Getting Your Own Goats
\n\n\n\n
If you still think goats are a sensible approach to lawn care for your yard, then make sure you understand a few critical facts about them. First, you’ll need more than one. Goats are social animals that belong in a herd. A solo goat is a sad, lonely, and shockingly loud creature. Let’s say you want a pair of goats to manage your property. If you want them to perform a stellar job of managing your lawn, you’re going to have to provide them with a few essentials.
\n\n\n\n
Good fencing makes good neighbors and good goats. It’s critical for controlling what the animal eats. Electric net fencing is ideal because you can move it around to do rotational grazing and use it to protect trees and flower beds. Goats need lots of water, so they need a bucket close by at all times. And as much as you want your goats to focus all their efforts on your yard, they’ll need another food source, too. Most goat owners feed supplemental pellets to make sure the animal is getting enough nutrition.
\n\n\n\n
Goats’ Special Needs
\n\n\n\n
Goats evolved to eat a wildly varied diet, and grass alone isn’t sufficient. They also need a mineral block similar to a salt lick but specially formulated for goats. Goats need their hooves trimmed at least once a month, so you’ll need to learn how to handle hoof trimming tools and rowdy animals. Finally, goats need a warm, dry place to shelter from rain and sleep at night.
Goat lawn care is not for everyone, but if your property is riddled with blackberry brambles, brush, and other nasty overgrowths, it may be for you. On the other hand, if you’re just trying to keep the weeds under control, you may be better off with backyard chickens.
\n","title":"Mowing Alternative: Lawn Goats","featured_media":{"localFile":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"aspectRatio":1.23,"src":"/static/438e18bdfee0da1dc558040fcd4046a3/1789c/grass-lawn-meadow-wildlife-goat-herd-624371-pxhere.com_.jpg","srcSet":"/static/438e18bdfee0da1dc558040fcd4046a3/107df/grass-lawn-meadow-wildlife-goat-herd-624371-pxhere.com_.jpg 320w,\n/static/438e18bdfee0da1dc558040fcd4046a3/293e9/grass-lawn-meadow-wildlife-goat-herd-624371-pxhere.com_.jpg 500w,\n/static/438e18bdfee0da1dc558040fcd4046a3/f2cbb/grass-lawn-meadow-wildlife-goat-herd-624371-pxhere.com_.jpg 800w,\n/static/438e18bdfee0da1dc558040fcd4046a3/1789c/grass-lawn-meadow-wildlife-goat-herd-624371-pxhere.com_.jpg 960w,\n/static/438e18bdfee0da1dc558040fcd4046a3/fc559/grass-lawn-meadow-wildlife-goat-herd-624371-pxhere.com_.jpg 1107w","srcWebp":"/static/438e18bdfee0da1dc558040fcd4046a3/1dd6e/grass-lawn-meadow-wildlife-goat-herd-624371-pxhere.com_.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/438e18bdfee0da1dc558040fcd4046a3/67b76/grass-lawn-meadow-wildlife-goat-herd-624371-pxhere.com_.webp 320w,\n/static/438e18bdfee0da1dc558040fcd4046a3/8df11/grass-lawn-meadow-wildlife-goat-herd-624371-pxhere.com_.webp 500w,\n/static/438e18bdfee0da1dc558040fcd4046a3/98a65/grass-lawn-meadow-wildlife-goat-herd-624371-pxhere.com_.webp 800w,\n/static/438e18bdfee0da1dc558040fcd4046a3/1dd6e/grass-lawn-meadow-wildlife-goat-herd-624371-pxhere.com_.webp 960w,\n/static/438e18bdfee0da1dc558040fcd4046a3/f64c3/grass-lawn-meadow-wildlife-goat-herd-624371-pxhere.com_.webp 1107w","sizes":"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px"}}}},"yoast_meta":{"yoast_wpseo_title":"Mowing Alternative: Lawn Goats | Wikilawn","yoast_wpseo_metadesc":""}}},{"node":{"id":"90807d2f-a2df-50be-892b-8d966e9b56ad","slug":"best-yard-games","path":"/lawn-care/best-yard-games/","status":"publish","template":"","format":"standard","author":{"description":"","name":"Ruma Akter","id":"b4adb332-066f-5309-a11a-ada9d71b73f7","path":"/author/opushaon10/","avatar_urls":{"wordpress_96":"https://secure.gravatar.com/avatar/ebb2426fcf700731e458d89422adc475?s=96&d=mm&r=g"}},"categories":[{"id":"205f24d4-c1e5-5728-bb28-8ba70eecbc7a","name":"Lawn Care","count":432,"path":"/category/lawn-care/"},{"id":"cb2b47be-d0ca-5bee-88fc-9bb625c184bd","name":"Outdoor","count":6,"path":"/category/outdoor/"}],"date":"October 22nd, 2019","excerpt":"
Remember the good old days, before our phones became our primary tool for recreation? It’s time to bring back the good old days by bringing out the best yard games.
\n\n\n\n
Exercising is becoming rare, starting in childhood. Pediatric occupational therapist Angela Hanscom says, “Ideally, kids should be playing outside three hours each day.” She also believes the skills gained in play help children learn how to make friends and successfully interact with others.
\n\n\n\n
So how do you pick the lawn games the whole family will enjoy? As long as you have two functional thumbs and an Amazon account, a world of yard games new and old await you.
\n\n\n\n
The Classic Lawn Games
\n\n\n\n

Badminton

Bocce Ball

Cornhole

Croquet

Frisbee

Lawn Darts

\n\n\n\n
What baby boomer doesn’t remember growing up playing badminton? All you need is a net, birdies, and racquets. Portable badminton sets allow you to take the game to the neighborhood park or a friend’s house. Bocce ball is another portable game that comes with a carrying case. It’s history dates back to ancient Egypt, and it’s a national pastime in France and can be played on a court or a lawn. Pack it up and take it to your next tailgate party.

\n\n\n\n

One of the joys of cornhole is the length of the throw can be instantly changed to match the size and skills of the players. It was such a craze that, according to the London Telegraph, “only tobacco smoke spread faster through the English empire.”
\n\n\n\n
It maintained its popularity with help from “Alice in Wonderland” and the movie “Heathers,” and no wonder: It’s a cutthroat yard game disguised as a mild-mannered, upper-crust entertainment. Play on a large lawn, but in a version of extreme croquet, almost anything goes. Six players play at a time. If you prefer a more aerobic game, grab a frisbee and head out to the backyard. You’ll need good hand-eye coordination, and a willingness to jump and the flying disk. Step it up, and get a team together for a game of ultimate Frisbee.

\n\n\n\n
The original game of lawn darts was a longtime favorite but was deemed too dangerous to sell after one accident too many. Small children will certainly enjoy giant connect four and giant Jenga more than games that require a lot of hand-eye coordination, while much older players may not appreciate a vigorous game of bocce ball.

How many people will be playing? Some games have unlimited numbers of players, and others are more suited to two-on-two or even one-on-one.

How competitive are the players? Or maybe you spent the weekend weeding, only to come home and find grass or dandelions poking up between your pavers or the cracks of your sidewalk. They’re unsightly and can cause serious damage to your walkway.
\n\n\n\n
Before you reach for the spray bottle of Roundup or some other toxic weed killer containing glyphosate, take a look in your kitchen. You may already have all the ingredients to kill weeds and grass in driveway cracks. Homemade solutions are both cheap and eco-friendly.
\n\n\n\n
Let’s start with why grass and weeds are attracted to sidewalk cracks. The cracks and crevices look small, but the spaces between pavers hold an amazing amount of dirt and organic matter. This matter gets swept by wind and rain and snow. Those crevices also hold onto moisture a little longer than flat surfaces, so it’s a perfect incubator for the weed seeds or grass.
\n\n\n\n
The setup also gives grass and weeds a little protection from you. It’s tough to get to the grass roots, or taproots of the weeds when all you can do is try to pull the unwanted plants by their tops. And you’re not likely to mulch those areas, as you would your flower beds, to prevent a return. But you can find everything you need to get to the root of the problem, in your kitchen — without turning to chemical herbicides sold at the garden center.
\n\n\n\n
The good news is that because the unwanted intruders are in driveway or sidewalk cracks, you don’t need to be as precise when applying your homemade remedies. A poorly aimed squirt has less of a chance to hit and accidentally kill desirable plants.
\n\n\n\n

\n
6 DIY methods to get rid of weeds and grass in driveway cracks
\n\n\n\n

Pour boiling water on the cracks.

Kill them with a mixture of dish soap and white vinegar.

Sprinkle baking soda or salt on the weeds.

Douse the cracks and crevices with bleach.

Dig the weeds out with ice pick or screwdriver.

Seal the cracks to prevent weeds from returning.

\n\n\n\n

\n

\n\n\n\n
First, a word of warning: These common kitchen ingredients aren’t toxic in small doses, but they’re not benign, either. “Several can be harmful to people/pets during mixing and application, owing to inhalation, skin or eye contact, or spray mist. Some have unpleasant smells or have an allergenic effect,” writes Deborah Smith-Fiola and Stanton Gill for the University of Maryland Extension. Some hazards are obvious: Boiling water can burn you if you are not careful with it. Others aren’t as obvious. Don’t take chances and handle all of them carefully.
\n\n\n\n
Details and cautions
\n\n\n\n

Pour boiling water on the weeds or unwanted grass. The hot water will kill the plants quickly. This method is guaranteed to kill just about any plant, and it’s great if you need a quick fix. The con: boiling water doesn’t prevent the weeds or grass from coming back.

\n\n\n\n

Fill a sprayer with white vinegar and add a little dish soap. The soap allows the vinegar, also known as acetic acid, to stick to the weeds, killing them. The con: the vinegar in your kitchen may not be strong enough, depending on the kind of weeds or grass you’re fighting. You can also use vinegar that is designated as an herbicide. Horticultural vinegar is about 20% acid, and much stronger than white vinegar. Horticultural vinegar is especially useful in killing small, young broadleaf weeds, like plantain. Crabgrass is also vulnerable to horticultural vinegar. Do NOT allow the vinegar to come in contact with your lawn or plants. It will kill all the greenery.

\n\n\n\n

For a more permanent weed solution, mix a gallon of white vinegar with two cups of table salt and spray on weeds and grass in the driveway cracks. It may take more than one application, but eventually, a cup of salt or two will stop the weeds from coming back. The con: Salt can change the salinity of your soil, which could have an impact on the rest of your yard.

\n\n\n\n

Dump baking soda on to the crack weeds and grass. Follow up with a good soaking with the hose to help the baking soda target the roots. Do it again in a couple of weeks if the problem isn’t gone. The con: Baking soda also increases the salinity of the soil.

\n\n\n\n
The pros of homemade weed killers are that yes, they do provide some level of weed control, without the environmental or health risks that toxic chemicals can leave behind. That’s more peace of mind for parents, pet owners, and for people who care about the environment. It also gives you more control over your weed problem, killing those stubborn grasses and new weeds that seem to pop up all too often in the driveway cracks and crevices of your hardscaping. If you apply natural weed killer enough and at the right time, you may finally be free of those pesky plants that ruin the look of your yard.
\n\n\n\n
Image credit: “Hordeum leporinum,” by Matt Lavin, CC by SA 2.0
\n","title":"Getting Rid of Weeds, Grass in Driveway Cracks","featured_media":{"localFile":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"aspectRatio":1.3333333333333333,"src":"/static/758039ca3b2de2ecb8e7a4ee81da9156/1789c/rsz_weed-in-driveway-crack-matt-lavin-cc20.jpg","srcSet":"/static/758039ca3b2de2ecb8e7a4ee81da9156/107df/rsz_weed-in-driveway-crack-matt-lavin-cc20.jpg 320w,\n/static/758039ca3b2de2ecb8e7a4ee81da9156/293e9/rsz_weed-in-driveway-crack-matt-lavin-cc20.jpg 500w,\n/static/758039ca3b2de2ecb8e7a4ee81da9156/f2cbb/rsz_weed-in-driveway-crack-matt-lavin-cc20.jpg 800w,\n/static/758039ca3b2de2ecb8e7a4ee81da9156/1789c/rsz_weed-in-driveway-crack-matt-lavin-cc20.jpg 960w,\n/static/758039ca3b2de2ecb8e7a4ee81da9156/356ef/rsz_weed-in-driveway-crack-matt-lavin-cc20.jpg 1280w","srcWebp":"/static/758039ca3b2de2ecb8e7a4ee81da9156/1dd6e/rsz_weed-in-driveway-crack-matt-lavin-cc20.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/758039ca3b2de2ecb8e7a4ee81da9156/67b76/rsz_weed-in-driveway-crack-matt-lavin-cc20.webp 320w,\n/static/758039ca3b2de2ecb8e7a4ee81da9156/8df11/rsz_weed-in-driveway-crack-matt-lavin-cc20.webp 500w,\n/static/758039ca3b2de2ecb8e7a4ee81da9156/98a65/rsz_weed-in-driveway-crack-matt-lavin-cc20.webp 800w,\n/static/758039ca3b2de2ecb8e7a4ee81da9156/1dd6e/rsz_weed-in-driveway-crack-matt-lavin-cc20.webp 960w,\n/static/758039ca3b2de2ecb8e7a4ee81da9156/93f70/rsz_weed-in-driveway-crack-matt-lavin-cc20.webp 1280w","sizes":"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px"}}}},"yoast_meta":{"yoast_wpseo_title":"Getting Rid of Weeds, Grass in Driveway Cracks | Wikilawn","yoast_wpseo_metadesc":""}}},{"node":{"id":"e2bbed9d-9766-5df7-a6c8-1ba4f2a29739","slug":"when-how-to-winterize-your-sprinkler-system","path":"/blog/home-and-garden/when-how-to-winterize-your-sprinkler-system/","status":"publish","template":"","format":"standard","author":{"description":"Jackie Greene is a blogger, gardener, and nutrition enthusiast. But the question of when to stop watering your lawn and winterize your sprinkler system is a little more complicated.
\n\n\n\n
Most of the country will see at least one deep freeze during the cold season. Many more will see freezing temperatures and snow through the winter months. The answer to when to shut off your sprinkler system for the season depends on the length of your growing season and the part of the country where you live. Lawns in Texas will need water until they go dormant in November. In Colorado, sprinkler systems run the risk of freezing by the end of September. Some cities and counties also restrict when and how long you can water.
\n\n\n\n
When the time does come, you will want to get your irrigation system ready for the harsh winter, so you won’t have any unpleasant, wet surprises.
\n\n\n\n

\n
5 Steps: How to Drain, Winterize Your Sprinkler System
\n\n\n\n

Find the manual drain valves located downstream of each zone valve.

Turn off the water supply by closing the main valve in the sprinkler valve box.

Open all the drain valves for each zone, and leave them open until all the remaining water drains from the pipes.

Lift and drain all sprinkler heads, even if you have an automatic draining system.

Close all the drain valves.

\n

\n\n\n\n
Alternative: The ‘Blow-Out’ Method
\n\n\n\n
You can also use the blowout method. you’ll need an air compressor, a quick-connect air hose adaptor, and eye protection. Close the main supply valve and the valves around the backflow device. Uncap the blow-out port, connect the quick-connect hose adaptor and attach the compressor hose.
\n\n\n\n
It’s important to have a pressure regulator and adjust to pressure to 40 psi if you have PVC pipes, and 50 psi if you have polyethylene pipes. Too much air pressure and the air will crack your pipes. You’ll want to blow out your sprinkler system zone by zone.
\n\n\n\n
Remember to wear eye protection. This will protect you in case one of the sprinkler heads pops off during the blowout. You want the sprinkler heads to pop up and push out any water remaining in your water line.
\n\n\n\n
If you’re not certain or intimidated by the idea of blowing out the sprinkler system yourself, you can hire a professional to do it. It should cost from $50 to $150, depending on how big your irrigation system is and where you are. If you plan to do it yourself, renting an air compressor can run you about $50, give or take a few bucks.
\n\n\n\n
After the water is expelled, you can turn things off for the season by cutting off the water supply at the main shut-off valve. It’s typically a ball valve with a lever. The shutoff valve will keep water from the main water supply from entering your pipes during the winter months.
\n\n\n\n
Keeping Faucets From Freezing
\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n
Outdoor faucets can freeze just as fast as sprinkler systems. Winterization is crucial if you don’t want to see burst pipes in early spring. Find the shut-off valve in your garage or basement and turn them off. Turn on all faucets to drain any water. Faucets in the southern half of the U.S. are often more vulnerable since Southern homes aren’t built for hard freezes. Since the pipes are often more exposed, one freeze can do a lot of damage. Consider buying faucet and pipe covers to insulate them during the winter — just in case.
\n\n\n\n
When to Turn the Sprinklers Off, Protect the Faucets
\n\n\n\n
If you walk outside in the morning and see frost, don’t confuse that with the killing freeze that ends the season. According to the National Weather Service, “Typically, frost can occur when the temperature falls below 36 degrees Fahrenheit, especially in rural areas. It is a localized phenomenon and can be quite variable across a small area. While the National Weather Service does not keep track of ‘frost’ in observations per se, we do keep track of when temperatures hit the freezing mark or fall below.”
\n\n\n\n
Meteorologists define a hard freeze as occurring at 28 degrees Fahrenheit. That’s the start of the pipe-busting kind of freezing cold weather and the kind of cold that can kill plants. It can also take out a sprinkler valve or two.
\n\n\n\n
It usually arrives in the first 10 days of September in the upper altitudes of the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. In Key West, Fla., you can expect the first freeze on the 10th of Never (there has never even been frost, let alone sleet or ice, in America’s southernmost city). Your local TV meteorologist will tell you in no uncertain terms that a hard freeze is in the forecast, and you need to protect your pipes, pets, plants.
\n\n\n\n
Protecting your pipes and winterizing your lawn sprinkler system is crucial in parts of the country that see hard freezes during the winter months, and that includes most of the US. It’s easy to keep track of what areas have already had their first freezes, thanks to the Midwestern Regional Climate Center, which tracks first freezes as part of its Vegetation Impact Program. It’s what can happen to your lawn or garden when you over-fertilize. It can also occur when you apply fertilizer to wet grass or plants. Your previously green foliage will look scorched: It will turn yellow, then brown. This can happen within a day or two, or it can take several weeks with a slow-release fertilizer.
\n\n\n\n
The Michigan State University Extension office offers this advice: “Look for turf fertilizers that have at least a portion, 25 percent or more, of their nitrogen in the form of slow-release N [nitrogen].” Organic lawn fertilizer is another good choice. It doesn’t contain synthetic chemicals, so it’s less likely to burn your lawn.
\n\n\n\n
Fertilizer burn happens because fertilizers contain salts that can draw moisture away from grass and plants, causing them to dry out and turn brown. This damage can show up in stripes from overlapping spreader rows, or in larger patches on your lawn. Oregon State University’s Extension department suggests that you “water long enough to wash granules off foliage or until granules completely dissolve.”
\n\n\n\n
Use our guide on When and How to Fertilize Your Lawn correctly to learn how to apply the right fertilizer in the right amount at the right time. Done correctly, fertilization will help your grass, not burn it.
\n\n\n\n
How to Fix Fertilizer Burn
\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n
Your lawn can recover from fertilizer burn. If the damage is limited to the leaves or blades, but the roots are OK, you can fix it easily. If the roots are damaged, it’ll take more effort.
\n\n\n\n
Your first step is to check the roots as soon as you notice any yellow or brown spots. Check the roots in more than one spot. If the roots are healthy and not dried out, you’ll need only to water the grass to dilute and remove excess fertilizer.
\n\n\n\n
Water, Water, Water
\n\n\n\n
No matter how much damage you have, you’ll need to water, water, and water the affected areas. When you’re done with that, you’ll need to water some more. Water helps carry the fertilizer salts into the soil and dilutes their concentration. Give the damaged areas at least an inch of water a day for a week or more. Remember to water in the morning so the water has time to evaporate off the grass blades. This will prevent the additional problem of fungal disease. Using sprinklers will help you evenly distribute the water. Watering unaffected areas will help the fertilizer salts leach through the soil throughout the yard, rather than keeping them concentrated in one area.
\n\n\n\n
Monitor the Comeback
\n\n\n\n
You should start to see new growth by the end of the first week, or a few days after that. If not, you’ve probably got root damage. Check the roots in the affected areas again. If the roots are shriveled and brown after a week of watering, they’re past the point of saving. You’ll need to reseed or re-sod those areas. Don’t start this process before you’ve watered, because you need to flush the minerals out of the soil. Otherwise, you’ll have the same problem with your replanting.
\n\n\n\n
After correcting the burn, preventing it from happening again is a matter of basic lawn care. Following these tips can help keep your lawn looking green and healthy without unsightly signs of fertilizer burn. Applying fertilizer correctly will let it do its job of nourishing your lawn, rather than damaging it.
\n\n\n\n
FAQ About Fertilizer Burn
\n\n\n\n
What kind of fertilizer causes fertilizer burn?
\n\n\n\n
Immediate-release fertilizers, liquid fertilizers, and synthetic fertilizers are most likely to burn your grass. To reduce the risk of fertilizer burn, choose a slow-release, granular, organic lawn fertilizer. Learn more in our article How to Choose Lawn Fertilizer.
\n\n\n\n
Does timing affect fertilizer burn?
\n\n\n\n
Yes, applying fertilizer at the wrong time of year can cause fertilizer burn.
